About the Role

The Somali Arts Foundation (SAF) is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our team for a mapping exercise aimed at identifying and analyzing innovative art initiatives that address local challenges across Africa. This role is an exceptional opportunity for individuals passionate about contemporary African art and social change. You will engage in qualitative research, interviews, and contribute to a comprehensive report on the impact and effectiveness of these initiatives. This remote position requires availability during East Africa Time zone working hours and offers an exciting chance to work with dynamic and impactful projects in the field of art and social change.

Key Responsibilities

As the Research Assistant, you will work closely with the Research Lead to ensure the successful completion of the project. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Research Methodology Design

  • Collaborate with the Research Lead to design a robust research methodology tailored to the project’s objectives.
  • Identify appropriate research tools and techniques that will enable effective data collection and analysis.

2. Qualitative Interviews

  • Conduct in-depth interviews with artists, organizations, and community members to gather insights into their experiences and needs.
  • Document the interviews accurately, ensuring the data reflects the participants’ perspectives.

3. Contemporary African Art Research

  • Research and document contemporary African art initiatives, with a specific focus on their social impact and effectiveness.
  • Analyze the data to identify key themes, success stories, and trends within the contemporary African art scene.

4. Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Analyze collected data to draw meaningful conclusions that align with the project’s objectives.
  • Prepare a detailed report, in collaboration with the Research Lead, highlighting the findings and providing actionable recommendations for enhancing the impact of these initiatives.

5. Regular Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with the Research Lead to ensure alignment with project objectives and timelines.
  • Provide updates on project progress and seek guidance when needed.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience

To succeed in this role, you should meet the following qualifications and possess the relevant experience:

1. Educational Background

  • Minimum BA in Humanities or a related field; an MA in a relevant discipline is highly desirable.

2. Language Proficiency

  • Fluency in English is essential, both in written and verbal communication.
  • Knowledge of French is desirable but not mandatory.

3. Research Experience

  • Proven experience in researching contemporary African art, with a strong understanding of the cultural and social context.
  • Analytical skills that enable you to synthesize complex information into coherent and actionable insights.

4. Communication Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively.
  • Experience in report writing and documentation is an asset.

5. Remote Work Competence

  • Ability to work independently and manage your time effectively in a remote work environment.
  • Familiarity with remote work tools and platforms to facilitate communication and collaboration.
