Background

Health Strat is an indigenous public health organization dedicated to designing and implementing innovative health system solutions. Specializing in HIV, TB, RMNCAH/FP, and Non-Communicable Diseases programs in Kenya, at both national and county levels, Health Strat works with donor-funded initiatives to improve public health outcomes. We are currently seeking experienced and qualified individuals for the role of Finance Intern.

About the Project

Monitoring and Evaluation & Strategic Information Systems (MESIS) is a collaborative project led by Health Strat, in partnership with the National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP) and the University of Nairobi. This initiative operates through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to enhance strategic information capacity for HIV/AIDS programs. Utilizing innovative health information systems and data science, MESIS aims to sustain epidemic control in Kenya.

Position Summary

The Finance Intern will provide crucial support to the Finance Department, primarily in filing and retrieval of documents, preparation of payment vouchers, filing of statutory payments, and data entry into FMS.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support in Statutory Returns Filing: Assist in filing PAYE, NHIF, NSSF, NITA VAT, and WHT within stipulated deadlines.
  • Document Management: Label and store physical and soft files systematically to facilitate easy retrieval.
  • Payment Oversight: Review vendor and M-PESA payments, ensuring mandatory support documents are complete.
  • Report Preparation: Assist in generating required information for reports as designated by the Senior Finance Officer.
  • Document Validation: Ensure that documents, including bills/invoices for payment, are properly supported.
  • Payment Voucher Preparation: Assist in preparing payment vouchers and ensure they are adequately supported.
  • VAT Reporting: Prepare monthly VAT reports for grants as applicable.
  • Bank Reconciliation: Assist in the preparation of bank reconciliations.
  • Invoice Processing: Raise invoices on Navision for approval.
  • Audit Preparation: Support the Finance Assistant in preparing for audits by arranging necessary documents, ensuring proper documentation of transactions/expenditure, and preparing audit schedules.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (Accounting/Finance Option) or any related business field with at least CPA Part I or its equivalent.
  • Proficiency in IT, particularly Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of an accounting system is advantageous.
  • Previous internship experience is desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills.
