Job Summary

The Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu, a key institution within the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), is actively seeking a Driver (Locum) to join their Security and Logistics Department. As part of the hospital’s growing network across East Africa, the selected candidate will contribute to community health initiatives by driving hospital vehicles, including mobile clinics, to various outreach locations. The ideal candidate should demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a willingness to work under minimal supervision, ensuring efficient operations in alignment with the hospital’s goals. This role is a critical part of delivering health services to communities through clinics, health fairs, and other outreach events.


Key Responsibilities

  • Driving Responsibilities: Operate hospital vehicles, including mobile clinic vans, to transport healthcare professionals and equipment to various outreach clinics, health fairs, and community events.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Conduct basic vehicle maintenance checks, including pre-trip and post-trip inspections, to ensure vehicles are in optimal working condition. Schedule any necessary repairs in coordination with the Logistics Coordinator.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate travel logs detailing travel routes, mileage, and working hours. Ensure the mobile clinic vehicles remain clean and operational at all times.
  • Compliance: Adhere to the Kenya Highway Code and other Kenyan traffic laws. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, such as Traffic Police and National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officials, to ensure smooth transport operations.
  • Accident Reporting: Immediately report any accidents or vehicle incidents to the Supervisor and follow the required processes.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Driving License: Must hold a valid driving license with classifications B, C1, C, and D1.
  • Institutional PSV Badge: Possession of an Institutional PSV Badge is mandatory.
  • Educational Requirements: Minimum KCSE certificate (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education).
  • Experience: At least two years of driving experience in a corporate, government, or non-governmental organization (NGO) setup.
  • Traffic Law Knowledge: Proficient understanding of the Highway Code and relevant Kenyan traffic laws related to commercial operations.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot basic vehicle issues and coordinate repair services efficiently.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work at odd hours and travel with short notice when required.

Responsibilities in Detail

1. Driving and Safety Compliance

As a Driver (Locum), you will be responsible for driving hospital vehicles to various destinations across East Africa. This includes adhering to all traffic laws, operating the vehicles safely, and ensuring patients and healthcare workers reach their destinations without incident. You will also be expected to maintain full operational readiness of the vehicles, conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and reporting any concerns to the Logistics Coordinator.

2. Logistical Support

You will support logistical coordination by maintaining accurate travel logs, which will track areas traveled, mileage, and work hours. Coordination with law enforcement agencies will also be a part of your role to ensure seamless operations during travel. Any accidents or incidents will need to be reported promptly to your supervisor.

3. Vehicle Maintenance

Part of your responsibilities includes vehicle maintenance, where you’ll be required to perform basic maintenance tasks. If necessary, you will coordinate with the logistics department to schedule repairs. Keeping the vehicles clean and fully functional is another key responsibility that ensures a smooth experience for patients and staff.

4. Outreach and Community Engagement

As a driver, you will play a vital role in community outreach efforts. This will involve driving the mobile clinic to various outreach events, including health fairs and community gatherings. These events are crucial in extending the hospital’s reach to underserved populations.


Working Conditions

  • Hours: Flexibility to work odd hours and weekends when required.
  • Travel: This role requires frequent travel across outreach locations within Kisumu and surrounding areas, including Kakamega, Kitale, Busia, and other towns.
  • Remote Locations: The job may require travel to remote locations with short notice. Candidates must be prepared for occasional overnight stays in these areas.
