Job Summary

As an Underwriting Specialist, Risk Survey at Heritage, you will play a crucial role in coordinating the risk survey unit activities. You will be responsible for vetting risks through comprehensive surveys, ensuring that only quality business is accepted under favorable terms, continuously appraising risk exposures for existing policies, and advising on new risk trends. Your efforts will directly contribute to the profitability and achievement of set loss ratio targets.

Key Responsibilities

Coordination and Monitoring

• Coordinate Risk Survey Activities: Lead the risk survey section, ensuring efficient and thorough assessment processes.
• Monitor Emerging Trends: Stay abreast of new developments in the risk environment and provide strategic advice to the company on their implications.

Risk Assessment and Review

• Risk Assessment at Insurance Application: Evaluate selected risks during the insurance application process to determine their acceptability and guide underwriters on inherent exposures.
• Review Existing Policies: Analyze our portfolio to profile and prioritize risks for surveys.
• Engage External Surveyors: When necessary, collaborate with the Head of Underwriting to appoint external surveyors for specific risks.

Liaison and Reporting

• Liaison with Surveyors: Work closely with outsourced/external surveyors, ensuring their reports align with the company’s interests.
• Collaborate with Teams: Engage with the Business Development team, underwriters, and intermediaries to conduct thorough risk surveys.
• Risk Information Collection: Gather and assess on-site risk information, including photographic evidence, and estimate potential loss scenarios considering the insured risks and client business aspects.

Client Advisory and Risk Mitigation

• Advise Clients: Provide on-site consultations to clients, discussing opportunities and requirements to reduce future insurance claims.
• Prepare Survey Reports: Develop comprehensive survey reports and communicate Risk Improvement Recommendations (RIR) for effective risk mitigation.
• Follow-Up on RIR Implementation: Ensure clients implement RIRs, conducting re-surveys as necessary, and advise underwriters on actions for non-compliance.

Safety Programs and Training

• Develop Safety Programs: Create customer-specific safety programs aimed at mitigating potential losses.
• Conduct Risk Management Training: Provide risk management training to staff periodically.

Qualifications

• Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil or Mechanical preferred).
• Additional Knowledge: Insurance or risk management knowledge is advantageous.

Experience

• Preferred Experience: Two years of experience in insurance-related survey roles will be highly regarded.
