Expert Tips to be a Successful Applicant for the Trades Helper Role

As a recruiting expert with over 30 years of experience, here are specific tips to help you craft a standout application for the Trades Helper position. Each tip is tailored to help you succeed, bypass the Applicant Tracking System (ATS), and impress hiring managers:

  1. Highlight Relevant Skills: Focus on experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or carpentry work. For example, mention specific tasks you handled, such as troubleshooting HVAC units, which are directly applicable to embassy operations.
  2. Use Specific Action Verbs: Frame your duties with powerful verbs like “assisted,” “maintained,” or “repaired.” ATS algorithms favor action words and increase your application’s chances of passing the screening.
  3. Quantify Your Experience: Quantitative data enhances credibility. For instance, “Performed maintenance on over 50 HVAC systems annually” highlights both your expertise and productivity.
  4. Emphasize Safety Knowledge: Show familiarity with PPE and safety protocols. Mention instances where you proactively used safety measures, like “Consistently ensured all safety gear was used on construction sites.”
  5. Align Language Skills: Since English and Kiswahili proficiency is required, detail any formal training or certification in these languages or describe instances where your bilingual abilities contributed to job success.
  6. Detail Your Driving Experience: Since a valid driver’s license and five years of experience are required, specify the types of vehicles driven and any additional safety measures adhered to.
  7. Tailor Your Application for the Embassy Setting: Emphasize your ability to work in sensitive environments like embassies or governmental buildings and any familiarity with international operations.
  8. Highlight Customer Service Skills: Showcase any experience interacting with diverse groups, reflecting the embassy’s values in diplomacy and service.
  9. Craft a Compelling Cover Letter: Address your application to the Embassy HR, briefly mention why you are interested in embassy operations, and emphasize how your background in skilled trades aligns with their values.
  10. Use Targeted Keywords: Include terms like “maintenance,” “HVAC,” “plumbing,” “building systems,” and “safety compliance” throughout your resume and cover letter to improve ATS ranking.
