Overview

Code for Africa (CfA), Africa’s largest digital and data journalism initiative, is seeking a Somali Translator to join the PesaCheck team. This is a remote, full-time position available to candidates based anywhere in Africa, with a particular focus on those located in Somalia. As a translator, you will play a crucial role in combating misinformation and online hate speech by translating content between Somali and English, supporting our mission to provide accurate information to the public.

Job Summary

Join us at Code for Africa (CfA), where your work will have a direct impact on the accuracy of information across the African continent. As a member of the PesaCheck team, the largest fact-checking initiative in Africa, you will be responsible for translating content between Somali and English. Your translations will help debunk misinformation, shine a light on public finances, and ensure that the public is accurately informed.

PesaCheck operates in 18 African countries, producing over 2,000 fact-checks annually in partnership with major platforms like Facebook and TikTok. We’re looking for a skilled translator with a deep understanding of African political affairs, who can work efficiently in a fast-paced, multinational environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurate Translation: Translate, review, and adapt content from English to Somali and vice versa, ensuring accuracy and cultural relevance.
  • Content Localization: Provide input on localizing and adapting content to suit the cultural contexts of Somali-speaking audiences.
  • Content Variety: Work with various content types including short-form articles, long-form articles, blog posts, and social media content.
  • Editorial Adherence: Maintain the style and tone of translated content while adhering to PesaCheck’s editorial guidelines and brand standards.
  • Project Management: Manage multiple translation projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and ensure timely delivery of content.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with the PesaCheck team, including the chief translator and chief copy editor, to ensure high-quality translations.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Keep relevant stakeholders informed of the status of translation tasks, seeking clarity and feedback as needed.
  • Research: Conduct terminology research to stay updated on industry language and maintain translation accuracy.
  • Training and Mentorship: Provide training and mentorship to journalists and fellows within CfA’s programs, supporting their development in translation skills.
  • Workshop Support: Occasionally provide translation or interpretation support during internal training sessions and workshops.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, Literature, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least three years of experience as a translator/interpreter, with demonstrable expertise in both Somali and English.
  • Language Proficiency: Native Somali speaker with fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools and translation memory software.
  • Content Adaptation: Ability to translate complex details into easily understandable language, adapting content to local contexts.
  • Multitasking Ability: Excellent time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize efficiently.
  • Attention to Detail: High accuracy in translation with a keen eye for detail.
  • Organizational Skills: Capable of managing and overseeing multiple timelines and schedules effectively.
  • Digital Collaboration: Proficiency in collaborative work solutions such as Google Workplace (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets), Slack, and Trello.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification: Certification in translation and/or interpretation.
  • Media Experience: Previous experience working in the media sector.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Awareness of cross-cultural dynamics and the ability to adapt content accordingly.
  • Knowledge of Current Affairs: Strong understanding of contemporary political, economic, social, and scientific issues in Africa and globally.
  • International Collaboration: Experience working with international partners and team members.
