As a leading African-led research center headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, APHRC is dedicated to conducting policy-relevant research in key areas. We are currently implementing a significant program, ‘Challenging the Politics of Social Exclusion’ (CPSE), aimed at translating continental commitments into actionable policies. This initiative aims to enhance sexual and reproductive health, focusing on young people and women, aligning with Agenda 2063’s vision.

The Role: Senior Advocacy Officer

Program Focus and Objectives

As the Senior Advocacy Officer, your role is pivotal to driving evidence-based advocacy on three critical sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues:

  1. Adolescents’ sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  2. Access to safe abortion and post-abortion care.
  3. Addressing discrimination against marginalized sexual and gender minority groups.

Key Responsibilities

Advocacy and Policy Development

  • Develop and execute targeted advocacy strategies to influence policy change at regional, sub-regional, and national levels.
  • Represent APHRC in international, regional, and national events, advocating for SRHR policy changes.

Partnerships and Engagement

  • Cultivate relationships with decision-makers, UN agencies, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to facilitate evidence-based advocacy.
  • Collaborate with key networks and actors to foster joint efforts in SRHR policy development.

Capacity Strengthening

  • Create and implement robust capacity-building strategies for partners and APHRC teams in advocacy, communication, and monitoring and evaluation.

Communication and Knowledge Translation

  • Work with the communication team to ensure clear internal and external communication of advocacy efforts.
  • Develop key advocacy knowledge products, such as policy briefs and analysis reports, to effectively communicate SRHR issues.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Document progress and impact of policy interventions to guide decision-making and promote learning.
  • Generate high-quality data for timely decision-making and produce quality narrative reports.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields; master’s degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of advocacy and policy engagement experience, with a focus on SRHR and health policy.
  • Strong project management, budgeting, and people management skills.
  • Proven ability to translate research into policy/advocacy work.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in policy development and advocacy, including stakeholder engagement.
  • Exceptional writing skills for various audiences, including policymakers.
  • Flexibility in responding to evolving priorities and external environments.
  • Desire to maintain knowledge of sexual and reproductive health policies.
  • Existing network in the SRHR space in Africa preferred.
