Position Summary
At IPA, we’re seeking a dedicated Research Scientist to serve as an internal Principal Investigator (PI) within our Applied Research & Methods group. Your role will involve leading and collaborating on a range of studies that contribute to our mission of fighting global poverty. You’ll work closely with internal and external PIs, pushing forward groundbreaking research. Scholarly publication and presentation at conferences and meetings with policymakers are not just encouraged but fully supported.
Key Responsibilities
Contribution to Impact:
- Lead and contribute to research relevant to IPA’s mission, from conceptualization to findings presentation.
- Develop and refine research proposals.
- Provide training on running randomized trials and other specialized topics.
- Produce high-quality research papers and present findings at applied research and evidence conferences.
- Uphold the highest standards of research quality and ethics.
Research Support:
- Review and offer constructive feedback on study designs and manuscripts.
- Advise research teams on best practices for conducting field trials.
Note: The level of contribution may vary based on experience, with promotion linked to independence and success in developing a research agenda.
Qualifications
Required:
- Ph.D. or equivalent experience in economics, political science, sociology, statistics, epidemiology, public policy, public health, or related fields.
- Demonstrated expertise in sectors such as agriculture, health, education, financial inclusion, social protection, women’s empowerment, and climate change.
- Proficiency in publishing research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting in academic seminar formats.
- Experience in directing junior research team members.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Commitment to research quality and integrity.
- Ability to work across diverse cultural contexts.
Preferred:
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Statistics or similar expertise in sampling designs and weights.
- Proficiency in Bayesian modeling and inference.
- Expertise in machine learning, social media analysis, natural language processing, and big data techniques.
- Experience and expertise in qualitative and mixed-methods research.
- Working knowledge of research systems such as Stata and SurveyCTO.
- Working proficiency in French.
