AFIDEP (African Institute for Development Policy) is seeking a dynamic and skilled Research Officer – Economist to join our team. This role is integral to a groundbreaking initiative focused on advancing women’s economic empowerment (WEE) in East and West Africa. As a key contributor, you will play a crucial role in shaping AFIDEP’s WEE program through research, analysis, advocacy, and capacity building.

Position Overview

  • Location: Nairobi or Lilongwe office
  • Role: Research Officer – Economist
  • Initiative: Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Program

Key Responsibilities

1. Landscape Study Development

  • Collaborate on conceptualizing and designing landscape studies for WEE in East and West Africa.
  • Participate in literature reviews, in-depth interviews, data analysis, and report writing for the landscape study.
  • Engage with WEE stakeholders in Africa through consultations.

2. Dissemination and Publication

  • Assist in sharing landscape study findings via stakeholder dialogues and journal publications.
  • Contribute to dialogue events and communicate results effectively.

3. WEE Program Implementation

  • Contribute to designing WEE projects based on landscape study outcomes.
  • Actively participate in project conceptualization, fundraising, and implementation.
  • Contribute to macroeconomic analyses to make gender-responsive policy recommendations.
  • Facilitate capacity development sessions for evidence-based policymaking, programming, and advocacy.

4. Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy

  • Collaborate with governmental agencies and leaders to provide technical support.
  • Craft high-quality technical briefs, reports, and presentations for policymakers.

5. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Lead the planning of productive policy dialogues on WEE.
  • Monitor, learn, and evaluate the WEE program’s progress, integrating lessons into future work.
  • Contribute to progress reports for funding partners.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Development Economics, or related fields (e.g., Gender & Development).
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in gender-focused research and advocacy.
  • Profound understanding of gender and macroeconomic policy issues.
  • Strong analytical skills, including experience with statistical software and modeling.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities, both technical and non-technical.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, organizational capabilities, and relationship-building proficiency.
  • Proven track record of managing multi-stakeholder, multi-country research projects.
  • Independent worker with excellent prioritization and multitasking skills.
