Job Summary
CIP is currently seeking a dynamic and experienced Research Associate specializing in Molecular Biology. The successful candidate will join the Biotech team based in Nairobi, Kenya, working under the supervision of the Associate Scientist – Molecular Biologist. The role will involve genome editing of potato plants, focusing on optimizing protoplast isolation, gene construct development, and molecular characterization. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research that addresses global food security challenges through biotechnological innovations.
Key Responsibilities
- Optimize protoplast isolation and regeneration protocols to enhance the production of genome-edited potato plants.
- Develop and validate gene constructs.
- Conduct transient expression studies using CAS9, gRNA, and ribonucleoprotein (RNP) transfection.
- Apply virus-induced genome editing (VIGE) techniques to create foreign-DNA-free edited events.
- Perform molecular characterization of transgenic and genome-edited plants using PCR, RTq-PCR, Southern blot, sequencing, and bioinformatics tools.
- Manage phenotyping by artificial infection of plants with local pathogen strains in the biosafety glasshouse.
- Handle heavy intermittent workloads, including tasks that may extend beyond regular office hours or occur during weekends.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Associate Scientist.
Qualifications and Skills
- Master’s degree in agricultural biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, or plant pathology, with a strong focus on molecular biology.
- Minimum of four years of experience in a related role.
- Comprehensive knowledge of genome editing, genetic transformation, and plant tissue culture, preferably involving roots, tubers, or banana crops.
- Proficiency in both English and Swahili, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong networking abilities and a demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
