Research Associate I – Farmer-led Adaptation and Participatory Action Research

Introduction to ILRI:

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is on the lookout for a dedicated Research Associate I to join its team on a temporary basis. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in supporting participatory action research and farmer-led scaling for climate change technologies. This position entails contributing to the planning, coordination, and execution of research activities aligned with the participatory action research and farmer-led scaling project plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with Site Identification and Pioneer Farmer Selection:
    • Collaborate in the identification of suitable sites and pioneer farmers.
  2. Project Activity Organization and Facilitation:
    • Organize and facilitate project activities, including farmer field days.
  3. Data Collection Support:
    • Assist in conducting various data collection activities, such as household surveys, semi-structured interviews, and workshops.
  4. Partnership Maintenance:
    • Maintain partnerships with local leadership, county extension officers, and project partners.
  5. Reporting and Documentation:
    • Prepare activity reports and assist in data analysis.
    • Maintain up-to-date filing systems and provide regular updates to the supervisor.
  6. Transcription and Translation:
    • Transcribe and translate interviews as required.
  7. Travel and Additional Duties:
    • Undertake frequent travel to farms, often located at a considerable distance from main roads.
    • Perform any other relevant duties assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 1 year of experience in social sciences, development studies, extension, or related fields.
  • Alternatively, a diploma in a relevant field with three years of relevant experience.
  • Strong background in social research, climate change adaptation, and interdisciplinary understanding of social and basic bio-physical sciences.
  • Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative research methods.
  • Experience in participatory research and stakeholder engagement in rural contexts.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools such as NVIVO, R, or STATA is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills.
  • Fluent in English and Swahili, with a preference for proficiency in Kalenjin.
  • Based in Rift Valley with substantial work experience in Nandi and Bomet Counties.

Terms of Appointment:

This position is at job level HG 10 and is exclusively open to Kenyan nationals. It is a temporary position for a duration of 6 months.
