Position Overview: Research Assistant – Maize Breeding

Job Category: Research and Development, Agriculture, Plant Breeding

Advanta is on the lookout for a dynamic and skilled Research Assistant to support our maize breeding projects. This role, reporting directly to the Senior Breeder, requires a proactive individual with a proven track record in delivering results in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.


Key Responsibilities

Site Selection and Trial Management

  • Participate in selecting trial sites and preparing seeds for trials.
  • Oversee the planting process and manage multi-location trial sites.
  • Frequently travel to trial sites to conduct management activities.

Data Collection and Processing

  • Accurately record and process data as directed by the breeder, ensuring timely submission.
  • Participate in nursery operations, including seed preparation, planting, crop management, pollination, and data collection.

Seed Inventory Management

  • Assist in forecasting trial seed requirements for upcoming seasons.
  • Ensure the production of adequate quality and quantity of seeds.
  • Manage seed inventory and storage efficiently.

Problem-Solving and Other Duties

  • Take initiative in problem-solving and perform any other duties as agreed with the line manager.

Desired Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, or related Agricultural Sciences.
  • Experience: Minimum of two years (for BSc) or one year (for MSc) experience in managing agricultural field research activities or projects.
  • Technical Skills: Excellent data processing and report writing skills using MS Office and other IT software.
  • Research Operations: Familiarity with pollination, data collection from trials and nurseries, and other research operations.
  • Management Skills: Ability to manage labor and organize field staff to support breeding research activities.
  • Independence and Teamwork: Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a multicultural team environment.
  • Citizenship: Must be a Kenyan citizen.
