Introduction

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) are global leaders in sustainable forestry and agroforestry. With a combined 65 years of cutting-edge research, CIFOR and ICRAF have built a robust knowledge base in forestry and agroforestry, addressing challenges such as climate change, energy insecurity, and biodiversity loss.

We are currently seeking a Regional Coordination Officer (Africa) to join our team. This critical role focuses on fostering regional strategies and enhancing the impact of the International Land Coalition (ILC). The position offers a unique opportunity to engage with diverse stakeholders and promote sustainable land governance in Africa.


Key Responsibilities

1. Work Planning, Implementation, and Positioning

The Regional Coordination Officer plays a pivotal role in aligning ILC’s operations with its 2030 strategy. Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing regional trends to identify opportunities and threats for strategic planning.
  • Developing regional work plans that incorporate members’ priorities and align with ILC’s global goals.
  • Coordinating implementation plans, ensuring they address critical land governance issues in the region.
  • Supporting the selection of high-impact regional initiatives that reflect ILC’s strategic objectives.
  • Preparing progress reports on regional achievements to assess alignment with ILC’s vision.
  • Identifying and cultivating strategic partnerships with key organizations to amplify ILC’s impact.
  • Representing ILC in significant regional processes to advocate for land rights.

2. Regional Governance and Support to Regionalization

The officer ensures that regional governance is robust and aligned with ILC’s global objectives. Key duties include:

  • Promoting accountability and transparency in regional governance structures.
  • Supporting the ILC Africa Regional Committee and the Coalition Council to drive cohesive decision-making.
  • Coordinating member engagement to enhance the vibrancy and effectiveness of the ILC network.
  • Identifying and addressing capacity-building needs within the regional team.
  • Implementing common tools and systems to streamline operations across the region.

3. Coordination of Global Functions in the Region

Collaborating with global work leads, the officer ensures regional priorities are integrated into ILC’s global frameworks. Responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to global communication strategies by highlighting regional priorities.
  • Assisting in the development of a resource mobilization strategy to support regional initiatives.
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and leadership development within the region.
  • Coordinating flagship events such as the Global Land Forum when hosted in the region.

4. Managerial Functions

The officer ensures integrity and equity in managing ILC’s resources. Duties include:

  • Overseeing personnel and financial management within the regional operations team.
  • Managing the performance of staff and consultants.
  • Developing and implementing regional budgets and work plans.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in development initiatives, with a focus on natural resource management or rural development.
  • At least three years of experience in multicultural organizations or global initiatives.
  • Proficiency in English (Excellent).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with grassroots NGOs or multi-actor partnerships.
  • Familiarity with international policy frameworks related to environmental sustainability.
  • French language skills (Excellent) are highly desirable.

Terms and Conditions

  • This is a Globally Recruited Staff (LRS) position with competitive remuneration in US dollars.
  • Initial appointment is for one year, including a three-month probation period, with potential extension based on performance and funding.
  • The role is based in Nairobi, Kenya, but remote work arrangements are available. The duty station will be determined in consultation with the selected candidate.
