Organization Summary

The Green Belt Movement is a non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in Kenya in 1977 by Professor Wangari Maathai, focusing on environmental conservation and the empowerment of rural communities, especially women. Through environmental education and conservation activities, the Green Belt Movement has played a key role in climate change mitigation and sustainable livelihoods. The organization’s work revolves around reforestation efforts, capacity building, and fostering leadership in rural communities.

Position Summary

We are seeking to fill two Project Officer roles to support the implementation of a critical project aimed at capacity building, promoting good governance, and leadership development. These efforts will be concentrated in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, specifically in North Nandi and Tinderet. This is a full-time role that will involve working directly with local communities to restore and conserve ecosystems through active replanting and restoration efforts.

Key Responsibilities

As a Project Officer, you will be responsible for the successful execution of the project, ensuring it meets both donor expectations and executive directives. Your key tasks will include:

1. Project Planning and Execution

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate project activities according to approved project documents, supporting agreements, and annual work plans.
  • Prepare annual and quarterly work plans and ensure that they align with donor requirements and organizational objectives.
  • Conduct thorough needs assessments and gap analyses to identify the capacity-building needs of the public health workforce and partner organizations.
  • Oversee the implementation of community-based projects related to replanting, restoration, and sustainable resource management.

2. Training and Capacity Building

  • Design and develop training curricula, modules, and materials based on identified capacity-building needs.
  • Facilitate interactive and engaging training sessions for staff and community partners using a variety of instructional methods and technologies.
  • Foster knowledge exchange among stakeholders by organizing communities of practice, workshops, and online learning platforms.

3. Reporting and Documentation

  • Ensure timely reporting to the Executive Director and donors, meeting all donor implementation, reporting, and filing requirements.
  • Handle all program requests, claim forms, and submit to the accounts department for processing.
  • Ensure that field staff (GVs, Tree Nursery Groups (TNGs), and casual workers) are paid on time and manage imprest accounting.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Develop monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness of capacity-building activities and their impact on community development.
  • Compile and share best practices related to public health capacity building, ensuring continuous improvement in training methodologies and program implementation.

5. Representation and Advocacy

  • Represent the Green Belt Movement in relevant steering groups, workshops, and conferences.
  • Act as a liaison between community leaders, local government, and external stakeholders to advocate for environmental conservation and leadership initiatives.

6. Supervision and Leadership

  • Supervise field staff to ensure their activities are aligned with project goals.
  • Ensure that all team members have clear objectives and that their work aligns with the overall organizational strategy.
  • Promote strong team collaboration and ensure that staff members have the necessary support and resources to achieve their goals.

7. Additional Responsibilities

  • Carry out any other project-related tasks as assigned by the Executive Director in alignment with the organization’s mission and goals.

Qualifications and Skills Required

To be considered for the Project Officer position, candidates must meet the following qualifications and skill requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in project management within community-based projects and natural resource management.
  • Proven experience with donor reporting and project proposal writing.
  • Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders and tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with social enterprises, especially in clean energy management or related fields, is an advantage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a focus on report writing and documentation.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage several high-priority tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Experience working on donor-funded projects is highly preferred.
