Position Overview

Project Manager – Social Norms and Behavior Change

The Project Manager for Social Norms and Behavior Change will take the lead in an innovative 3-year project focusing on driving social norms and behavior change related to gender justice and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) among teenagers/adolescents and young women within diverse communities across Kenya. This role requires a blend of project management and behavioral science expertise to design, implement, and evaluate culturally sensitive interventions that challenge and shift social norms, particularly those held by religious leaders.

The primary objective is to strengthen the agency of adolescent girls and young women, enabling them to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and other gender justice issues. The Project Manager will work closely with county-level partners, faith leaders, volunteers, and other stakeholders to co-create evidence-based solutions that are in line with the strategic goals and values of Faith to Action Network.


Key Responsibilities

1. Project Management, Implementation, and Reporting (50%)

  • Design and Oversee Project Phases: Lead all phases of the project, including co-creation, inception, implementation, and evaluation. Ensure the donor remains actively involved and consulted throughout the project.
  • Workplan Execution: Implement the project’s workplan as submitted to the donor, ensuring that all activities are conducted in full alignment with the plan and meet specified timelines and objectives.
  • Coordination Across Counties: Manage the project across several counties in Kenya, providing accurate and timely narrative and financial reporting in accordance with donor requirements and templates.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with local stakeholders, including faith leaders, volunteers, and county officials, to ensure adherence to high standards of rigor, creativity, and a people-first approach.
  • Representation and Reporting: Represent Faith to Action Network in meetings, manage relationships with donors and stakeholders, and ensure that all reporting, updates, and follow-ups are conducted to satisfaction.
  • Budget Management: Collaborate with the Finance team to manage and monitor project budgets, ensuring adherence to financial targets and timelines.
  • Digital Project Management: Utilize digital tools such as Project Connect to keep the project on track and ensure effective communication across teams.

2. Stakeholder and Partner Management (10%)

  • Stakeholder Buy-In: Secure and maintain the active buy-in of all stakeholders, including religious leaders, authorities, and youth leaders, ensuring their ongoing engagement throughout the project.
  • Partner Support: Manage and support local partners, particularly faith hubs and youth volunteers, by providing continuous guidance, feedback, and fostering an inclusive, multifaith work culture.
  • Performance Monitoring: Conduct regular check-ins, performance reviews, and site visits to ensure optimal partner and volunteer performance.

3. Behavioral Science Research and Design (20%)

  • Research and Data Analysis: Identify existing evidence and data gaps, organizing research activities such as literature reviews, stakeholder interviews, surveys, focus group discussions, and ethnographic studies.
  • Research Collaboration: Work with the M&E lead to design and conduct both qualitative and quantitative research, integrating behavioral science principles.
  • Behavioral Model Application: Apply and adapt behavioral models to analyze data, identify gaps, and propose evidence-based solutions.
  • Field Research: Lead in-field norms change research and provide clear, concise reports on findings.

4. Behavioral Science Thought Leadership (10%)

  • Knowledge Development: Collaborate with the Knowledge Manager, M&E Lead, and Gender Justice Technical Lead to develop and integrate behavioral science components into the project.
  • Thought Leadership Contribution: Publish research, participate in podcasts, and advise on the latest tools and techniques in behavioral science, behavioral economics, and ethnographic research.

5. Resource Mobilization and Innovation (10%)

  • Project and Partner Identification: Identify new projects, partners, and growth opportunities within the social norms change, behavioral science, and public health spaces.
  • Vision Contribution: Contribute to the organization’s vision and methodological approaches, particularly in proposals and business development activities.

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Educational Background: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in behavioral sciences, communications, social science, or other relevant fields (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience: A minimum of 7+ years of relevant, full-time work experience in behavior change science-related programs, including strategy development, community engagement, budgeting, M&E, financial reporting, and communications.
  • Sector Experience: Experience working with NGOs, CSOs, local community groups, faith-based leaders, and government agencies on community building and social norms change campaigns is highly beneficial.
  • Management Skills: Strong management skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of partners, including government officials, religious leaders, and community stakeholders.
  • Cultural Understanding: Experience working in semi-urban or rural areas of Kenya and/or with diverse faith-based organizations and leaders.
  • Donor Reporting: Demonstrated experience in preparing donor/project reports.
  • Sector Knowledge: Experience working in SBC programs focusing on Gender/SRHR or international development, particularly with bilateral agencies such as USAID or DFID, is a distinct advantage.
  • Donor Relations: Experience or exposure to managing donor relations for American-funded projects.
  • Workshop Facilitation: Highly skilled in facilitating workshops and applying behavioral science learnings to complex environments.
  • Behavioral Science Expertise: In-depth understanding of behavioral science principles and their application to social norms change in diverse cultural contexts.
  • Digital Literacy: High level of digital literacy with excellent communication skills, capable of using online collaboration and project management tools effectively with a remote team.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in English and Swahili.
