About Us:

Defenders Coalition, established in 2007, is the premier national organization dedicated to the protection and empowerment of human rights defenders (HRDs) in Kenya. Our mission is to enhance the effectiveness of HRDs and mitigate their vulnerability to persecution through protection, capacity building, and advocacy for a supportive legal and policy landscape.

Role Overview:

We are seeking Programmes Interns to support our initiatives in finance, Information Communication and Technology (ICT), journalism/public relations/marketing. Reporting to the Programmes Officer, you’ll actively contribute to Defenders Coalition’s activities, conduct research, assist in logistics, communication, and represent us in partner engagements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Programme Officers to implement Defenders Coalition activities.
  • Conduct monitoring, documentation, and research across program areas.
  • Assist in logistical planning for meetings and training.
  • Manage communication through various platforms with partners.
  • Represent Defenders Coalition in meetings and partner events.
  • Prepare timely reports following guidelines.
  • Document human rights violations cases.
  • Contribute to administrative functions as assigned.
  • Participate in fundraising efforts alongside program staff.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant Social Sciences from a recognized University.
  • Passion for human rights and defender issues.
  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Familiarity with national, regional, and international HRD protection frameworks.
  • Knowledge in designing communication interventions on governance and human rights.
  • Proficiency in IT skills, including website updates and social media.
  • Ability to draft reports, policy briefs, and concept notes.
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills.
