This position is based in the Communication Division at the Nairobi duty station, with responsibilities that span across the development and implementation of youth-related programmes within UNEP’s broader communication strategies.
Job Summary
The Programme Management Officer (Youth Programme Coordinator) will play a pivotal role in overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of youth engagement initiatives. This includes monitoring programme outcomes, leading outreach efforts, and fostering partnerships that support youth-focused communication campaigns. The role demands a professional with strong expertise in programme management, youth engagement, communication, and environmental advocacy.
The selected candidate will collaborate closely with various UNEP divisions and external stakeholders to ensure the effective integration of youth components into the organization’s strategic priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Programme Development: Oversee the design, execution, and evaluation of youth-related programmes.
- Outreach and Communication: Lead outreach strategies to engage youth, ensuring alignment with UNEP’s goals.
- Partnership Building: Maintain and cultivate relationships with partners and stakeholders to further youth engagement in environmental advocacy.
- Reporting: Prepare reports, draft papers, and contribute to publications that support programme objectives.
- Data Analysis: Leverage data analytics to identify trends, create reports, and guide decision-making processes.
- Budget Management: Coordinate activities related to budgeting and funding, ensuring accurate reporting.
Key Responsibilities
The Programme Management Officer (Youth Programme Coordinator) will be responsible for the following core tasks:
- Programme Development and Evaluation
- Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned youth-related programmes.
- Monitor and analyze programme performance, identify areas of improvement, and propose corrective actions.
- Liaise with relevant parties to address challenges and ensure programme objectives are met.
- Outreach and Communication Strategies
- Perform outreach activities to promote UNEP’s youth programmes, integrating youth-related activities into larger communication strategies.
- Collaborate with other UNEP divisions to ensure the youth perspective is represented in major environmental campaigns.
- Partnership Development
- Serve as the focal point for youth-related issues, maintaining strong relationships with current and potential partners.
- Actively engage with partners and stakeholders to foster collaboration in support of youth initiatives.
- Report Writing and Analysis
- Prepare various written outputs, including background papers, reports, and analysis.
- Conduct data analysis to support decision-making and create insights into youth programme impacts.
- Meeting Support and Coordination
- Provide substantive support to meetings and conferences, including agenda preparation, identifying participants, and creating presentations.
- Assist in coordinating the logistics of major youth-focused events and consultative meetings.
- Budget and Funding Coordination
- Coordinate activities related to programme/project budgets and funding.
- Prepare financial reports and other related documents to support the programme’s financial health.
- Data Analytics and Trend Analysis
- Use data visualization techniques (charts, graphs, tables) to communicate trends and insights.
- Utilize data to drive programme improvements and inform strategic decisions.
- Miscellaneous
- Perform other duties as required, including supporting team members and contributing to wider UNEP initiatives.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in international relations, communication, public policy, or a related field is required.
- A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
- Completion of programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is desirable.
Work Experience
- A minimum of five years of professional experience in programme management, communication, or international relations.
- At least two years of direct experience in environmental programme management.
- Three years of experience working in an international setting is highly desirable.
- Experience with youth engagement programmes and event planning is a plus.
- Proven experience in data analytics is desirable.
Skills and Competencies
- Programme Management: Strong experience in managing large-scale youth programmes.
- Data Analysis: Proficiency in data analytics to drive insights and inform decision-making.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, both in written and spoken English.
- Planning and Organizing: Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize workloads.
- Team Collaboration: Capable of working collaboratively in an international environment.
- Problem Solving: Aptitude for identifying and addressing challenges.
Languages
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of another UN language (such as French) is desirable.
