Planned Parenthood Global is searching for an enthusiastic, resourceful, and diligent Program Intern who is deeply committed to reproductive rights issues. As a Program Intern, you will have the opportunity to learn, participate, and support the Programs Team at the Africa Regional Office. Your role will involve providing technical and programmatic support to Planned Parenthood Global staff and partners dedicated to advancing adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Africa Region.

Purpose

As a Program Intern, you will report to the Associate Director of Service Delivery and collaborate closely with the broader programs team. Your role involves developing a work plan that aligns with our overarching strategy and focuses on key accomplishments during your 6-month internship, starting in October 2023. You will be based at our regional office in Nairobi, Kenya, with a hybrid model of 3 days in the office and 2 days working from home.

Engagement

You will engage internally with Programs, Finance, Operations teams, and PP Global partners.

Responsibilities

Overall Program Support (Approximately 30%)

  • Management, Oversight, and Support of Partner Contracts and Reports: This includes budgeting and monitoring expenditures.
  • Tracking and Reporting of Partner Program Work Plans: This involves reviewing and validating data presented in reports by implementing partners.
  • Youth Engagement: Serve as an expert resource and partner to other ARO colleagues seeking to engage youth in their programming or initiatives.
  • Research: Conduct general research and gather information to support SRHR programming.

Support for Youth Programming (Approximately 60%)

  • Youth Engagement Activities: Provide insights and support for the expansion of youth engagement activities.
  • Partner Reports: Oversee the preparation and submission of required partner reports, including responding to queries and coordinating field visits agendas.
  • Regional Cross Learning: Identify opportunities for regional cross-learning between the West and East Africa regions.
  • Brand Visibility: Work closely with the Digital and Media consultant to raise BNN’s brand visibility and impact in Africa.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical support, including advice on the youth strategy, policy and program analysis, and reviews to support the efforts and proposals of PP Global ARO colleagues seeking to engage youth.
  • Capacity Building: Strengthen the skills and knowledge of other PP Global ARO staff on youth engagement and mobilization.

Operations and Administration (Approximately 10%)

  • Consultants’ Deliverables: Support in the management and tracking of consultants’ deliverables and payments.
  • Logistics and Communication: Support logistics and communication in relation to events, seminars, workshops, and other joint activities with PP Global partners.
  • Other Duties: Carry out other duties as may be required from time to time, including administrative tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Degree in communications, public health, public policy, or related field – or equivalent experience. Other education credentials such as professional certificates from reputable institutions will be considered.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with young people, preferably in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • Proven experience using and tracking digital communications to encourage engagement of young people in advocacy and/or accountability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills required; budgeting skills preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, training, team-building, networking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English is mandatory; good command of French is desirable.
  • Flexible, cross-culturally aware, and adaptable to changes.
  • Travel: Ability to travel approximately 10-15% of the time when needed.
