Organization Overview


TaRL Africa is an initiative hosted by Empower Learning Africa, a not-for-profit organization headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Established as a joint venture by Pratham and J-PAL in 2019, the organization aims to accelerate children’s foundational skill learning across Africa through the evidence-based “Teaching at the Right Level” (TaRL) approach. With teams in Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Zambia, and registered offices in Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, TaRL Africa is dedicated to ensuring that every child on the continent has the foundational skills necessary for a better future. Our mission is to empower education systems to effectively equip children with these essential skills.

TaRL Africa supports governments and organizations in over 15 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa in designing, delivering, and scaling impactful TaRL programs. Our efforts have reached over five million children with foundational skill-building initiatives, and we continue to grow and evolve to meet the diverse needs of our partner communities.


Job Summary


The Program Coordinator (East & Southern Africa) will play a crucial role in supporting TaRL Africa’s country teams and partners. The coordinator will assist in strengthening program implementation, strategically planning for growth, and coordinating regional outreach efforts. The role involves substantial travel across Sub-Saharan Africa and may be based in any African country.


Key Responsibilities


1. Support and Coordination

  • Strategic Planning: Assist country and partner teams in the strategic planning and execution of TaRL programming, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Cross-functional Coordination: Coordinate across functional areas to provide comprehensive support throughout the development, implementation, and learning phases of TaRL initiatives.

2. Knowledge Sharing and Communication

  • Facilitate Knowledge Exchange: Support the exchange of insights and lessons learned across partners to enhance program effectiveness and foster collaboration.
  • Communication Development: Develop and disseminate communication materials that highlight program successes and lessons learned, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission.

3. Fundraising and Donor Management

  • Proposal Development: Support fundraising efforts by contributing to compelling proposals and budgets that align with donor expectations and program needs.
  • Donor Relations: Engage with donors to ensure alignment between their expectations and TaRL Africa’s mission, maintaining transparent and effective communication.

4. Event and Workshop Management

  • Event Planning: Plan and execute outreach events, training workshops, and other program-related activities to engage stakeholders and enhance program delivery.
  • Workshop Coordination: Coordinate workshops aimed at capacity building for partners and stakeholders, ensuring the effective transfer of knowledge and skills.

5. Financial Management

  • Budget Oversight: Oversee the financial management of TaRL programs, including monitoring budgets, ensuring compliance with financial policies, and managing donor conditions.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and review financial reports to ensure accuracy, transparency, and alignment with donor and organizational requirements.

6. Reporting and Documentation

  • Regular Reporting: Write and submit regular reports on project activities and outcomes for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Documentation Management: Ensure all project documents, including Annual Work Plans, budget revisions, and Performance Monitoring Plans, are submitted punctually and adhere to organizational standards.

7. Team Management

  • Supervision: Supervise 1-2 team members, providing guidance and support to ensure effective performance and professional development.
  • Mentorship: Mentor team members to enhance their skills and contribute to their professional growth within the organization.

Qualifications and Skills


1. Educational Background

  • Bachelor’s Degree: A degree in Education, International Relations/Development, Social Sciences, or a relevant field is required.

2. Work Experience

  • Relevant Experience: Must have 5+ years of relevant work experience in a similar role, particularly in program coordination, education, or international development.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to handle multiple diverse assignments simultaneously, successfully complete assigned tasks, and meet deadlines while conducting high-quality work.

3. Communication Skills

  • English Proficiency: Strong oral and written communication skills in English, particularly the ability to communicate technical research to policymakers in a non-technical manner.
  • French Proficiency: Strong oral and written communication skills in French are an added advantage.

4. Technical Skills

  • Microsoft Suite: Strong skills in the Microsoft suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, with the ability to synthesize information and make informed decisions.

5. Additional Requirements

  • International Travel: Ability and willingness to travel internationally frequently and flexibly to support policy outreach, scoping research, and training events. Most travel will be within Sub-Saharan Africa.
