Organizational Setting and Work Relationships
The Private Sector Partnerships Service (PSP) sits within UNHCR’s Division of External Relations (DER) and is responsible for mobilizing resources for refugees from the private sector. UNHCR has developed a Private Sector Fundraising Strategy 2018-2025, aiming to generate $1 Billion annually, prioritizing fundraising markets and regions. The PSP’s Private Partnerships and Philanthropy (PPH) Section aims to develop and strengthen long-term partnerships with companies, foundations, and private philanthropists (PPH donors). As a PPH Officer, you will be a vital part of the fundraising team, seeking support from PPH donors to secure funding for UNHCR programs and projects while fostering long-lasting holistic partnerships.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Engaging with PPH Donors
- Lead on engaging with a portfolio of PPH donors, ensuring a dynamic pipeline is maintained and updated.
- Oversee existing donor relationships to their full potential, fulfilling donor requirements.
- Develop solid stewardship plans to increase engagement with existing donors.
2. Exploring and Building New Relationships
- Negotiate and develop new relationships, preparing pitches, proposals, and grant applications.
- Support PSP HQ with timely reporting on contributions and development of funding proposals.
3. Event Organization and High-Profile Networking
- Participate in and organize high-profile events attended by existing and potential donors.
- Support PSP management in identifying key industrial sectors and contribute to local PSP/PPH strategy.
4. Monitoring and Reporting
- Monitor success metrics, income raised, and prospect pipelines to meet PPH targets.
- Maximize visibility opportunities by interacting with influential donors and providing recommendations.
5. Knowledge Sharing and Coordination
- Prepare briefings and reports on partnerships, relationships, and fundraising initiatives.
- Coordinate effectively with PSP HQ and other relevant internal stakeholders for synergies.
6. Private Philanthropy
- Lead the development of relationships with philanthropists, HNWIs, and ultra HNWIs.
- Manage a select portfolio of philanthropic relationships and implement care plans.
- Create and deliver materials for major donors tailored to their interests.
7. Foundations
- Lead the development and strengthening of relationships with foundations.
- Prepare and submit foundations grants, ensuring they fulfill donor criteria.
- Create and develop materials for foundations, targeting specific audiences.
8. Corporates
- Lead on the acquisition and development of partnerships with corporates and corporate foundations.
- Design and implement initiatives and materials for corporate audiences.
- Manage a select portfolio of corporate partnerships and develop stewardship plans.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Economics, Business Administration/Management, Social Sciences, or other relevant fields.
- Experience: 6 years of relevant fundraising and/or partnership management experience in an international environment or with humanitarian organizations.
- Certificates and Licenses: Fundraising certification preferred.
- Language Requirements: Fluency in English (verbal and written) required.
Desired Candidate Profile
Essential Criteria:
- Experience working in Africa and a demonstrated understanding of the market context.
- Experience managing high-value individual fundraising prospects, including CEOs, Private Philanthropy, and Celebrities.
Desirable but not essential:
- Proficiency in French language.
- UN experience.
Operational Context
The PPH Officer will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, working to support PSP across the continent with a focus on deepening engagement with the private sector for the benefit of refugees. The role involves managing high-profile relationships, celebrity support, and corporate partnerships to achieve fundraising and awareness-raising objectives.
