Organization: Sustainable Livestock Systems Program (LSE) at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

About ILRI:

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) is dedicated to improving food and nutritional security and reducing poverty in developing countries through research focused on efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. Position Overview:

ILRI is seeking a post-doctoral researcher with expertise in conflict resolution, transformation, and peacebuilding to investigate how natural resource management (NRM) approaches, such as participatory rangeland management (PRM), contribute to peacebuilding efforts. The selected candidate will conduct socially differentiated analyses to understand how variables like gender, age, education, and ethnicity influence individuals’ experiences.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Framework Development: Collaborate with NRM implementing partners and supporting researchers to develop an analysis framework for assessing the contributions of NRM to peace, with a specific focus on women and youth.
  2. Linkage Analysis: Study the connections between PRM (and potentially other NRM approaches) and conflict in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania, identifying elements conducive to peacebuilding.
  3. Intervention Enhancement: Strengthen PRM interventions to more intentionally target peacebuilding, piloting these approaches in ILRI-supported PRM locations or with NGO partners.
  4. Manual Development: Co-develop a practitioners’ manual on PRM for peacebuilding, alongside training materials and conduct training sessions.
  5. Impact Assessment: Develop indicators and a framework for further analyzing the impact of NRM on peace.
  6. Capacity Building: Contribute to building capacities in good governance and institution building in NRM/PRM applications and communities.
  7. Research Contribution: Contribute to ILRI’s Sustainable Livestock Systems programme’s dryland portfolio, including grant proposals and peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements:

  • PhD in conflict transformation, resolution, or peacebuilding, or related social science field
  • Experience applying conflict and peace principles to natural resource management
  • Work experience in Africa
  • Proficiency in participatory research, gender, and social inclusion
  • Strong qualitative analysis skills

  • Conversational French is an advantage
