Victoria Biomedical Research Institute (VIBRI), established in September 2020, is dedicated to advancing global health research, training, and education. The region faces some of the highest morbidity and mortality rates globally due to infectious diseases, while chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes are on the rise. To combat these health challenges, VIBRI focuses on epidemiological research and the clinical development of healthcare technologies aimed at improving health outcomes both locally and globally.
Key Responsibilities
The Nursing Officer will report directly to the Research Medical Officer and ensure the integrity and quality of clinical trials. This role plays a critical part in safeguarding the health and welfare of research participants while adhering to regulatory guidelines set by the institutional review board (IRB), VIBRI, and the government. The officer will manage clinical trial protocols, conduct patient assessments, and support the ongoing collection of medical data. Specific duties include:
- Screening and Recruitment: Conduct screening of potential participants, ensuring all relevant information is provided to make informed consent decisions. Responsible for obtaining full consent before enrollment.
- Participant Support: Offer continuous support to participants throughout the trial, ensuring compliance with protocols.
- Data Collection: Document patient data, ensuring accurate capture and timely reporting in both sponsor and VIBRI databases.
- Clinical Assessments: Perform medical assessments, including vital signs, imaging studies, and electrocardiograms, during clinic visits. Administer investigational medications and assess side effects.
- Compliance Monitoring: Ensure compliance with each study protocol by performing audits and maintaining investigational drug accountability.
- Regulatory Support: Assist in maintaining regulatory documents and support the Clinical Research Coordinator in managing studies.
- Quality Control: Conduct regular quality audits to maintain compliance with research protocols.
- Training: Ensure that all site staff are properly credentialed and trained.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential Requirements:
- Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution. Must be a registered KRN/KRCHN.
- Valid professional practice license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Certificate of registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
- Member of the National Nurses Association of Kenya.
- At least one year of post-internship experience, preferably within a medical research organization.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Fluency in both English and Swahili. Knowledge of Dholuo is an added advantage as it is the local language of the duty station.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
