The Opportunity

Are you an aspiring Junior Data Scientist with a passion for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data management? We’re on the lookout for a motivated individual to join our dynamic team in Kenya. As a Junior Data Scientist, you’ll take center stage in gathering, managing, analyzing, and interpreting geospatial data. Your work will drive data-driven decision-making and contribute to innovative project solutions. Your meticulous attention to detail and technical prowess will be crucial. Reporting to: Data Architect

Location: Natural State Headquarters, Kenya (Lewa or Nanyuki)

Responsibilities

GIS Data Analysis:

  • Data Cleaning and Integration: Work with extensive geospatial datasets, ensuring accuracy and consistency through thorough cleaning and integration into other Natural State datasets.
  • Spatial Insights: Utilize GIS tools to visualize and analyze spatial data, uncovering patterns and insights.
  • Geospatial Modeling: Conduct spatial analysis and modeling to support project goals.

Data Management:

  • Operational Models: Assist in designing data collection models that align with operational needs.
  • Efficient Data Strategies: Contribute to developing and implementing data management strategies, optimizing data collection, storage, and retrieval.
  • Data Quality: Collaborate across teams to establish data quality standards and perform regular audits to maintain accuracy.
  • Database Maintenance: Keep databases up-to-date, adhering to data privacy regulations.

Statistical Analysis and Modeling:

  • Statistical Tasks: Support the technical team in statistical analysis and predictive modeling using geospatial data.
  • Machine Learning: Aid in creating and evaluating machine learning models for geospatial applications.

Visualization and Reporting:

  • Effective Visualizations: Craft clear, visually appealing data visualizations and maps to convey complex geospatial information.
  • Analytical Insights: Prepare regular reports and presentations, delivering findings and recommendations to stakeholders.

Research and Innovation:

  • Tech Trends: Stay current with GIS technologies and data science methodologies.
  • Innovative Solutions: Contribute to innovative approaches addressing spatial data challenges.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Team Dynamics: Collaborate effectively within teams and participate in brainstorming and problem-solving sessions.
  • Interdisciplinary Projects: Contribute to projects that integrate GIS data with other datasets.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Computer Science, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, MapInfo) and geospatial modeling.
  • Experience with cloud-based geodatabases, such as AGOL.
  • Familiarity with data management techniques, data cleaning, transformation, and database maintenance.
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python or R).
  • Basic understanding of statistical analysis and machine learning concepts.
  • Strong communication skills for presenting technical information clearly.
  • Attentive problem-solving skills and proactive learning mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Previous experience in GIS or data science projects is advantageous.
  • Background in ecological sciences, geography, or environmental analysis is a plus.
