Introduction
UNESCO invites passionate and qualified Kenyan nationals to apply for the position of National Project Officer for Communication and Information based in Nairobi. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to UNESCO’s initiatives in communication and information within the frameworks of the UN Joint SDG Fund Programme and Delivering as One UN coordination mechanisms.
Successful candidates will play a critical role in advancing the Digital Platforms Kenya (DigiKen) program and supporting the Social Media for Peace (SM4P) project. Working alongside a network of partners, including the Government of Kenya, the UN Resident Coordinator, and the Delegation of the European Union, this role provides a platform to influence Kenya’s digital transformation and media development.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Management
- Conduct regular project reviews with stakeholders, including UNRC, Joint Programme Team members, and the Government of Kenya, documenting outcomes with minutes and action plans.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on Joint Programme and SM4P project activities for UNESCO, donors, and partners.
- Organize and lead Steering Committee meetings, ensuring actionable outcomes with well-documented minutes and timelines.
- Collaborate with the Public Information Officer to highlight project achievements and boost visibility through strategic content dissemination.
- Facilitate knowledge exchange among partners to identify innovative strategies for enhancing program delivery.
2. Monitoring and Evaluation
- Regularly assess the progress of Joint Programme and SM4P project activities and update the results framework as needed.
- Monitor the financial status of projects to ensure alignment with budget execution plans.
- Provide recommendations for optimizing resource utilization and meeting project objectives.
3. Support for Communication and Information (CI) Sector in Kenya
- Develop and implement CI sector activities in line with UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategy (2022-2029).
- Provide technical support to the Government of Kenya and stakeholders to implement the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
- Represent UNESCO in UN coordination teams, contributing actively to meetings and events.
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with ICT and media development organizations, fostering donor relationships and mobilizing resources.
- Stay informed about Kenya’s development needs, identifying opportunities for UNESCO interventions in the CI sector.
- Ensure program activities align with UNESCO’s gender equality priorities.
4. Resource Mobilization and Visibility
- Develop concept notes and proposals to attract funding for UNESCO’s CI and intersectoral programs.
- Organize promotional events and draft articles for the Regional Office’s website, enhancing visibility across online and offline platforms.
- Identify best practices to replicate successful initiatives at regional and national levels.
5. General Tasks
- Provide continuous progress updates and reports to UNESCO and stakeholders, emphasizing results and lessons learned.
- Undertake additional tasks assigned by the supervisor to ensure program success.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in communication, journalism, information science, digital transformation, public policy, international development, peacebuilding, or related fields.
Work Experience
- At least five years of professional experience in communication and information or a closely related area.
- Demonstrated experience in program development and management.
- Proven ability in advocacy, resource mobilization, and fostering strategic partnerships.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to draft concise reports and briefings.
- Exceptional organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
- Proficiency in using standard office software.
- Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, particularly for liaising with government and partners.
Languages
- Proficiency in English and Kiswahili (both written and spoken).
Desirable Qualifications
Work Experience
- Prior experience within the UN system or other international organizations.
- Familiarity with Kenyan government systems and policies on digital transformation.
Skills and Competencies
- Expertise in public relations, communication, and advocacy.
Languages
- Working knowledge of French.
