Introduction

Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is a globally renowned non-profit organization dedicated to transforming conflict resolution approaches. With headquarters in Washington, DC, and Brussels, Belgium, SFCG operates across 34 countries with a mission to promote peaceful resolution of conflicts. Our innovative programs emphasize collaboration over confrontation, fostering understanding and action on shared goals.

Within Sub-Saharan Africa, SFCG is active in 18 countries, including Kenya, where our efforts began after the post-election violence of 2007-2008. Since then, our programming has significantly contributed to peacebuilding, leveraging innovative approaches such as TV dramas, radio programs, community outreach, and partnerships with local organizations. Currently, SFCG Kenya is operational in Nairobi, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Lamu, Garissa, and Tana River Counties.

This Media Internship offers an opportunity to work in a rewarding environment, develop media production expertise, and contribute to fostering peace in Kenya and beyond.


Key Responsibilities

Media and Digital Peacebuilding

  • Assist in Implementing Media Strategies: Contribute to executing SFCG’s media and digital peacebuilding strategies effectively.
  • Support Branding and Visibility: Enhance SFCG’s branding initiatives and ensure visibility across platforms.
  • Technical Operations: Manage the setup and operation of audio/visual equipment, ensuring high-quality production standards.
  • Content Development: Create digital media content tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Media Kits: Prepare press and social media packs for events, projects, and campaigns.
  • Database Management: Maintain a database of traditional and social media stakeholders.
  • Social Media Monitoring: Engage in social media listening and early warning data collection and analysis.
  • Increase Engagement: Drive audience engagement by boosting page viewership and generating meaningful traffic.
  • Reporting: Generate analytical reports on social media traffic trends.
  • Facilitate Safeguarding: Document consent, safeguarding practices, and data protection compliance during activities.

Project Information Management

  • Monitor Media Outputs: Track and report media outputs and outcome-level results periodically.
  • Field Data Compilation: Collect, verify, and compile data from the field as per the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) plan.
  • Activity Reports: Review and compile activity reports, project progress reports, and other deliverables, including case studies, videos, photographs, and presentations.
  • Database Updates: Ensure the project database is updated and well-maintained.

Training and Development

  • Common Ground Journalism Course: Successfully complete this in-house training to enhance journalism expertise.
  • Safeguarding and Child Protection Training: Undertake mandatory training on safeguarding and child protection practices.

Internship Terms and Conditions

  • Supervision: The Senior Media Officer will supervise the intern, assign tasks, and evaluate performance.
  • Work Schedule: Work five days a week, with prior approval for days off.
  • Duration: January 2024 to June 2025.
  • Location: Based in Garissa.
  • Termination Notice: Either party may terminate the internship with a one-month written notice.
  • Laptop Requirement: The intern must have a personal laptop for operational convenience.

Qualifications and Skills

Educational Background

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in journalism, mass communication, public relations, or a related field.

Experience

  • 0-2 years of experience in NGOs or CSOs, preferably in project implementation or management within Kenya.
  • Experience working in Coastal Kenya is an added advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.
  • Audio and Video Production Expertise: Demonstrated ability to handle audio and video production tasks.
  • Knowledge of graphic design and professional photography.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong report-writing skills in English.
  • Cultural sensitivity and an unwavering commitment to peacebuilding and conflict transformation.
  • Proficiency in English and Swahili; knowledge of Somali is an advantage.
