Job Summary

We are looking for a Lead Researcher to spearhead a vital research study aimed at developing an educational model tailored for refugee and internally displaced communities in East Africa. This model will be instrumental in overcoming educational barriers and equipping recipients with skills to engage in gainful employment. The Lead Researcher will be responsible for supervising a team of researchers, conducting comprehensive literature reviews, and ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of data throughout the research process.


Key Responsibilities

1. Research Leadership

  • Conduct literature reviews to provide a foundation for the study and ensure that the research is built on existing knowledge and best practices.
  • Lead and supervise a team of researchers, ensuring that all team members adhere to the project’s goals and timelines.
  • Develop research tools in collaboration with the research team, ensuring that all tools meet ethical standards and are suited to the study’s objectives.

2. Research Design and Implementation

  • Design and develop the research study’s specifications, including methodologies, data collection procedures, and analysis strategies.
  • Create a detailed work plan outlining all phases of the research, from data collection to final reporting.
  • Participate in field data collection in the refugee settlements, ensuring data is collected systematically and ethically.

3. Data Management and Analysis

  • Analyze and interpret data, drawing actionable insights that will inform the development of the educational model.
  • Maintain secure databases, both electronic and hard copy, to ensure data integrity and confidentiality.
  • Resolve fieldwork challenges with the guidance of the Project Consultant, ensuring that any issues are addressed promptly and effectively.

4. Reporting and Dissemination

  • Prepare and present progress reports to stakeholders, providing clear updates on the research’s progress and findings.
  • Participate in project meetings and workshops, contributing to discussions on research findings and implications.
  • Disseminate research findings through presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications, ensuring that the knowledge generated is shared with relevant audiences.

Qualifications and Skills

Educational Background

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field such as humanitarian studies, education, or related disciplines.

Research Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in research data collection using various techniques, including in-depth interviews and key informant interviews.
  • Previous experience in refugee settlements and IDPs is highly desirable and will be considered an added advantage.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to conduct comprehensive literature reviews and write high-quality research reports with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working with international partners, including universities, NGOs, and CSOs, is highly valued.
  • Strong data analysis skills, with a proven ability to draw meaningful insights from complex data sets.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey research findings to diverse audiences.

Additional Requirements

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.
  • Desire to pursue a PhD, reflecting a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Knowledge of gender and feminist research approaches, which will be crucial in ensuring the research is conducted with sensitivity to gender issues.
