Position: Junior Professional Officer (Associate Programme Officer)

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Research and Documentation
In this role, you’ll be at the forefront of crafting impactful documents. You’ll research and draft position papers, think pieces, and communications on various thematic areas under UPB’s purview.

2. Support to Branch Chief
Work closely with the Chief of Branch by preparing substantive inputs for meetings and sessions. This includes briefing notes, background papers, talking points, and presentations.

3. Meeting Coordination
Prepare for internal and external meetings at the Branch level, including Expert Group Meetings and webinars. You’ll coordinate, review inputs, and draft comprehensive reports.

4. Communication Expert
Efficiently respond to internal and external inquiries and information requests. Your communication skills are vital in this role.

5. Data Analysis and Editing
Analyze information from diverse sources and edit documents in English, ensuring formatting, design, and layout meet professional standards.

6. Knowledge Management
Develop a robust knowledge management system for UPB, integrating the systems of various sections/units within the Branch.

7. Technology Integration
Propose innovative information technologies and systems for tracking and reporting programmes and projects, collaborating with colleagues across the Branch and ICT experts.

8. Other Duties
As required by the Chief of Branch, you’ll contribute to various initiatives and projects.

You may be called upon to undertake official missions related to your work programme.

Training and Learning

As a JPO, you’ll have the chance to enhance your skills through a variety of courses provided by the United Nations Office of Nairobi. These include language courses in all United Nations languages, computer training, management courses, and more. You’ll also receive on-the-job training in the management and administration of United Nations programmes. Attendance at one international conference/workshop/seminar annually is encouraged, exposing you to global best practices in urban policies and planning.

Qualifications, Experience, and Competencies Required

Education

  • Advanced university degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration, or related fields. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.

Work Experience

  • For candidates with an advanced degree: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in relevant areas such as political science, international relations, urban development, international economics, law, or public administration.
  • For candidates with a first-level degree: A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in the aforementioned areas.

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Supervision

This role is based in the Urban Practices Branch within the Global Solutions Division at UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi. You will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Urban Practices Branch.
