Job Title: IRS23144 Maize Entomologist for Africa

Overview:

CIMMYT®, the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, is seeking a highly motivated and outstanding candidate for the position of Maize Entomologist for Africa. This role will be a part of our Global Maize Program and based in Nairobi, Kenya. CIMMYT® is a non-profit agricultural research organization working for development with partners in over 100 countries.

Description:

The Maize Entomologist for Africa will be responsible for the following:

1. Supporting CIMMYT maize breeders in developing insect-pest resistant germplasm:

  • Efficient mass-rearing of insect-pests
  • Artificial infestation of maize germplasm
  • Phenotypic data generation for product advancement

2. Designing and implementing impactful work on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of maize insect-pests:

  • Collaborating with public and private institutions
  • Engaging extensional personnel and farming communities in eastern and southern Africa

3. Conducting innovative entomology research for genetic improvement of insect-pest resistance in maize:

  • Testing Bt transgenes in lab, greenhouse, and field as part of the TELA Project

4. Supporting the development and implementation of Insect Resistance Management (IRM) strategies:

  • Ensuring sustainable deployment of Bt-based insect-resistant maize in TELA project countries

5. Providing technical backstopping and capacity strengthening to national/regional partners:

  • Focusing on advanced areas of maize entomology, breeding, and IPM

6. Contributing to research visibility and publications:

  • Designing and implementing high-quality research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals

7. Developing new project proposals in high-priority areas of CIMMYT®, including IPM.

8. Promoting visibility of CIMMYT’s research, partnerships, and impacts in Africa.

9. Handling other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Director, CIMMYT Global Maize Program.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Agricultural Entomology.
  • At least 5 years of research experience in agricultural entomology.
  • Applied knowledge of experimental design, management of field trials, and field breeding operations.
  • Experience in mass rearing of insect-pests under controlled conditions and their use in screening for resistance in lab and field-based crop research.
  • Demonstrated contributions in developing and testing technologies to control pre- and post-harvest insect-pests, and/or integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with SAS, SPSS, or other statistical software.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in refereed, high-impact scientific journals.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English, with strong communication skills.
  • Interest in international research and development, preferably with experience working in Africa.

The position is initially for a fixed-term of three (3) years, subject to performance and fund availability.
