MCE Social Capital (MCE) is an impact investing firm dedicated to providing loans to enterprises focused on generating sustainable livelihoods, with an emphasis on women and environmental sustainability. Since 2006, MCE has disbursed over $300 million in debt capital to 140 institutions in 55 countries throughout the developing world. Recently, MCE launched a new impact-first sustainable agriculture fund, MESA, increasing total assets under management to $100 million.

Our Investment Portfolios

  1. Inclusive Finance: MCE invests in Financial Service Providers (FSPs) such as microfinance institutions, fintech firms, and other financial service providers that help rural populations gain access to credit, savings, insurance, and business education. Loans can be up to $4 million.
  2. Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs): These businesses create jobs, help smallholder farmers improve productivity and income, and facilitate access to clean water and energy. MCE addresses market gaps by providing catalytic loans between $300,000 and $1.5 million.

Position Summary

Job Title: Investment Analyst – Africa
Location: Nairobi
Reporting To: Africa Regional Manager

The Investment Analyst will support the lending process to high-impact FSPs and SGBs in Africa and occasionally other regions. This includes deal sourcing, due diligence, financial analysis, deal structuring, and post-investment management across both investment portfolios. You will be part of a team of nine investment staff.

Responsibilities

Support Debt Finance Transactions

  • Initial Evaluations: Complete initial evaluations for prospective partners and present summary reports for Loan and Investment Committees screenings.
  • Financial Modelling: Assist senior staff in building financial models and conduct ad-hoc analysis during the due diligence process.
  • On-Site Due Diligence: Occasionally travel for on-site due diligence.
  • Investment Memoranda: Assist senior staff in preparing and writing investment memoranda.

Portfolio Monitoring & Analysis

  • Monitoring Models: Organize and enter monthly and quarterly financial and operational information for all active partners.
  • Client Calls: Organize, prepare, and lead quarterly calls with clients.
  • Quarterly Analysis: Perform quarterly analysis of portfolio compliance with covenants, country/regional diversification, and performance projections.
  • Annual Reviews: Conduct extensive annual reviews of audited statements for all active partners.
  • Regional Monitoring: Monitor regional situations, including quarterly analysis of country risk, currency risk, and associated macroeconomic variables.

Candidate Profile

An ideal candidate will possess the skills, abilities, and engagement that will allow them to evolve to the next level within the next 24 months. Within 12 months, under a Regional Manager’s supervision, an Investment Analyst is expected to perform solo on-site due diligence on FSPs and manage due diligence preparation for SGBs. The candidate should strive to generate positive environmental and social impact in line with MCE’s mission while managing portfolio economics and risks.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of four years in credit analysis or financial analysis, preferably in impact investing. Operational experience in agriculture or business processes is a plus.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in English is a must; fluency in French is a plus.
  • Financial Acumen: Strong understanding of financial accounting and ability to quickly analyze financial statements.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Excel and capable of creating complex financial models.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information concisely.
  • Work Ethic: Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently to complete tasks and bring new ideas to fruition.
  • Passion: Strong commitment to MCE’s mission and belief in the value of impact-first investing.
  • Travel: Willingness and ability to travel as needed.
