Role Overview

Organizational Setting

The GEF Coordination Office within UNEP has overarching responsibility for UNEP’s GEF corporate activities, including portfolio coordination, monitoring, and communication with the GEF Secretariat and partners. The intern will be integral to supporting the Programme Coordination Officer and the GEF Executive Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordination Officer and overall guidance of the GEF Executive Coordinator, the intern will:

  1. Research and Analysis: Contribute to research on operational topics such as GEF policies, compliance, and efficiency.
  2. Data Management: Assist in GEF Portfolio disclosure on platforms like UNEP Open Data and GEF Portal.
  3. Internal Processes: Handle internal processes, including project registry and follow-up.
  4. Data Requests: Respond to GEF portfolio data requests, coordinating with team members to gather information.
  5. Communication and Outreach: Support communication and outreach activities.
  6. Reporting and Follow-up: Follow up with GEF focal areas to identify issues and ensure timely report delivery.

Internship Details

Work Schedule

Interns are expected to work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in their assigned department. This internship is unpaid.

Qualifications and Special Skills

Academic Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in environmental sciences/management, public policy, business administration, or a related field.
  • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Recent graduates with a university degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D.).

Preferred Areas of Study: Environmental sciences/management, public policy, business administration, or related fields.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in computer skills and use of web-based platforms and relevant software (e.g., word processing, PowerPoint, Excel, internal databases, Internet).
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.
  • Ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing views.

Professional Experience: Not required, but relevant academic background is essential.

Language Requirements

Required: Fluency in English.
Desirable: Knowledge of another official United Nations language.

Additional Information

Interns are responsible for travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the internship location may need to obtain a visa and work authorization.
