Introduction

The African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES) is offering a unique Internship designed for young, ambitious professionals in Kenya. This is an exceptional opportunity for those passionate about climate science, policy, and practice to kickstart their career while becoming the next generation of climate leaders. By working closely with the NDC Delivery Lab and other partners, this Internship aims to provide extensive exposure to climate change mitigation, adaptation, and the implementation of high-impact projects.

The AGNES Internship Program offers a platform where selected candidates will enhance their expertise in the climate science-policy-practice nexus, enabling them to play a vital role in Kenya’s efforts to combat climate challenges. This six-month program will involve working with experts across sectors, participating in global climate negotiations, and contributing to projects with real-world climate impact.

About AGNES

The African Group of Negotiators Experts Support plays a pivotal role in driving climate change policy and action in Africa. AGNES works to support Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) through innovative approaches that translate climate commitments into sustainable, actionable projects.

AGNES believes in fostering young talents to become key players in the fight against climate change, and this Internship Program is part of their broader mission to prepare Kenya’s next generation of climate change experts and policymakers.

Program Overview

This Internship is tailored for Kenyan professionals at the start of their career with a bachelor’s degree or higher, who are interested in the intersection of climate science, policy, and practice. The NDC Delivery Lab component ensures participants are involved in real projects that transform climate commitments into on-the-ground implementation.

Key Objectives of the Internship:

  • Strengthen climate leadership: Equip interns with the tools, knowledge, and network to thrive in the climate policy-science-practice interface.
  • Contribute to IPCC processes: Enable interns to participate in critical climate change discussions, including the IPCC processes and UNFCCC negotiations.
  • Hands-on learning: Provide practical learning experiences in climate policy, negotiations, and project development.
  • Develop innovative solutions: Empower interns to design solutions that address climate risks.
  • Build networks: Create opportunities to form long-term professional relationships with experts in climate science and policy.

Eligibility Criteria

We are seeking highly talented and academically outstanding young professionals passionate about climate change and environmental issues. Applicants from under-represented groups, including women and persons with disabilities (PWDs), are especially encouraged to apply.

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be a Kenyan national.
  • Be 28 years old or younger.
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Be an early career researcher, with no more than two years of work experience since completing their degree.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills—both written and verbal.
  • Exhibit creative, innovative, and critical thinking.
  • Show a clear interest in the science-policy-practice nexus.

Key Responsibilities

As an AGNES Intern, your daily tasks will vary, but core responsibilities will include:

  • Policy Research and Analysis: Conduct research on climate change policies, both locally and internationally. Analyze and evaluate policy implications on national and regional climate strategies.
  • Climate Negotiation Support: Assist in preparing for international climate change negotiations. This includes gathering evidence-based data to inform climate action at international forums.
  • Project Development: Contribute to the design, development, and implementation of climate change projects. You will also collaborate with experts to ensure projects align with national climate targets.
  • Networking and Collaboration: Engage with experts, government officials, and other stakeholders to foster knowledge exchange, build long-lasting professional relationships, and promote climate innovation.
  • Knowledge Dissemination: Assist in creating reports and communication materials to promote AGNES initiatives and highlight the importance of climate action across various platforms.

To succeed in this Internship, candidates must have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution.
  • A keen interest in climate science, environmental studies, policy development, or sustainability.
  • The ability to think critically, solve problems, and propose innovative solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong ability to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible language for policy development.
  • Leadership potential, especially in contexts requiring collaboration across different sectors.
