The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the UN agency dedicated to promoting socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UN-Habitat plays a leading role in coordinating activities within the UN system concerning human settlement development and collaborates closely with local and regional governments globally.


About the Role

This internship position is an exciting opportunity to contribute to UN-Habitat’s efforts in supporting and empowering local and regional governments to localize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Working under the SDG Localization and Local Governments Team, you will assist in various capacities, focusing on capacity building and tools development to facilitate the localization of SDGs.

Key Responsibilities

Capacity Building and Tools Development:

  • Assist in Training Development: Aid in creating capacity-building offline and e-learning training modules.
  • Toolkit Development: Support the development of toolkits for local governments to prepare Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs) and SDG Cities initiatives.
  • Project Coordination: Assist in coordinating and delivering project outputs related to SDG localization.
  • Resource Design: Contribute to designing and updating tools and resources for capacity building and training in SDG localization.
  • Training Sessions: Help organize and facilitate training sessions, workshops, and webinars.
  • Team Collaboration: Work with team members to identify improvements and innovations in capacity building and toolkit development.
  • Communication and Outreach: Support communication efforts to promote capacity-building initiatives.
  • Trend Monitoring: Stay updated on relevant trends, developments, and resources in the fields of capacity building and tool development.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capacity Building: Understanding of capacity building and tools development is preferred.
  • Tool Development: Knowledge of principles of tool development, capacity building course development, operations management, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Project Management: Experience in project management is preferred.
  • Education: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
    • Graduated with a Bachelor’s degree, Masters, Ph.D., or equivalent.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite) is required.
  • Interest in UN: Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Financials: Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Visa Requirements: Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
