Job Overview

WERK seeks an experienced Grants Manager to join our Reading Champions project in Kenya. This role focuses on enhancing and sustaining student learning through robust educational systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in grant management, particularly with youth grants, and experience working in Kenya or East Africa.

Job Responsibilities

Grant Management

  • Capacity Building: Facilitate initiatives for sub-grantees, ensuring technical and financial alignment.
  • Award Cycle Preparation: Assist in preparing and documenting the grants award cycle, ensuring all technical prerequisites are available.
  • Budget Review: Aid sub-grantees in reviewing budgets for accuracy and reasonableness.
  • Financial Monitoring: Maintain a financial management system for the project, tracking fund reimbursement, liquidations, and burn rates.
  • Compliance: Ensure sub-grantees comply with periodic requirements as per grant agreements.
  • Disbursement Mechanisms: Establish sound mechanisms for fund disbursement and expense justification.

Operational Support

  • Team Collaboration: Work with project teams to ensure deliverables remain on schedule.
  • Technical Reports: Analyze funding requests and technical reports.
  • Day-to-Day Activities: Support operational activities to ensure the grants mechanism supports the project team.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited university.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of demonstrated experience managing projects, preferably related to early grade reading.
  • Grants Management: Proven experience in grants management, preferably in Kenya or East Africa.
  • Capacity Building: Experience in building the capacity of local organizations to implement and manage development projects.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively with youth, institutional, and private partners.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to prepare contractual documents and reports.
