Role Overview

The GPI Communications Intern will support the Biodiversity, Landscapes, and People Unit within UNEP’s Ecosystems Division. The intern will be directly supervised by the Coordinator of the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) and will work closely with various UNEP Divisions and Regional Offices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft and Update Content: Create and update content for the GPI and UNEP-peatlands websites, online groups, and social media outreach channels.
  • Content Creation: Draft news articles and blogs on topics related to peatlands restoration, conservation, sustainable management, ecosystem services, and climate change.
  • Event Assistance: Assist in the preparation and execution of GPI events, workshops, and South-South exchanges.
  • Outreach Materials: Develop awareness-raising, outreach, and advocacy materials, including speech-writing, presentations, and videos.
  • Research Support: Conduct research on best practices in peatlands conservation, sustainable management, and restoration to inform policy-making.
  • Meeting Preparation: Assist with preparations for GPI Steering Committee meetings and other partnership meetings, and attend if held in Nairobi.
  • Communication Liaison: Maintain regular communication within the GPI Partnership and with the public as needed.
  • Additional Tasks: Undertake other tasks as required, tailored to the intern’s interests and experience.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Master’s Degree (or within 1 year of graduation) or currently enrolled in a Master’s Programme.
  • Background: Degree in environmental sciences, environmental policy, biodiversity and conservation, development studies, or a related field is desirable.
  • Interest: Demonstrated interest in ecosystems management, restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate change, or sustainable development.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of peatlands or wetland ecosystem functioning is desirable.
  • Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in French and/or Spanish is desirable.
