The Maa Trust, a leading organization in the conservation sector, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Gender Officer to join our team in the Maasai Mara, Kenya. In this role, you will be responsible for the oversight of our internal gender and safeguarding policy, supporting partner organizations to create and enforce similar policies, and leading training workshops on gender equality, equity, and safeguarding. This role is crucial in promoting gender equality and safeguarding in the Maasai Mara Ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

1. Policy Development and Implementation

  • Develop, implement, and monitor safeguarding, gender, and sexual harassment policies within the organization.
  • Provide technical support to partner organizations and institutions in developing and implementing their own policies.
  • Ensure all policies are aligned with local, national, and international standards and best practices.
  • Regularly review and update policies to reflect the latest developments in gender and safeguarding practices.

2. Training and Capacity Building

  • Design and conduct training workshops on gender equality, safeguarding, and sexual harassment prevention for staff, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Facilitate capacity-building sessions for partners to strengthen their understanding and implementation of gender-sensitive practices.
  • Develop training materials that are culturally relevant and accessible to diverse audiences.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and make improvements based on feedback.

3. Support and Guidance

  • Provide ongoing support and advice to staff and partners on gender and safeguarding issues.
  • Act as a point of contact for gender-related concerns and ensure appropriate actions are taken in response to any violations.
  • Offer counseling and support to individuals affected by gender-related issues.
  • Collaborate with HR and legal teams to ensure compliance with gender and safeguarding policies.

4. Community Engagement

  • Work closely with key community stakeholders to promote gender equality and safeguarding practices at a grassroots level.
  • Collaborate with local leaders and community members to foster an environment of respect and inclusion.
  • Organize community outreach programs to raise awareness of gender and safeguarding issues.
  • Support community-led initiatives that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

5. Monitoring and Reporting

  • Monitor the effectiveness of gender and safeguarding initiatives and report on progress to senior management.
  • Document lessons learned and best practices to continuously improve the organization’s approach to gender and safeguarding.
  • Prepare detailed reports on the outcomes of gender and safeguarding programs.
  • Provide recommendations for future initiatives based on monitoring data.

Qualifications and Skills

Educational Background

  • A degree in Human Resources, Gender Studies, Social Work, Development Studies, or a related field.
  • A master’s degree is an added advantage, particularly in fields related to gender studies or safeguarding.

Professional Experience

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in gender and safeguarding roles within the development sector.
  • Proven experience working with pastoral communities in Kenya, ideally with the Maasai communities.
  • Experience in the conservation sector is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated experience in policy development, implementation, training, and capacity building.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of gender issues, safeguarding principles, and sexual harassment prevention.
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion and professionalism.
  • Fluency in English and Swahili is required. Knowledge of the Maasai language is an advantage.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
