Join the PesaCheck team, a division of Code for Africa (CfA), the largest indigenous fact-checking network on the continent. We are actively seeking experienced Fact-Checkers to join our multinational and multilingual team in remote positions based anywhere in Africa.


About PesaCheck

PesaCheck operates across 18 African countries and is dedicated to debunking misinformation on digital platforms and traditional media outlets. As the largest fact-checking initiative by geographic coverage, PesaCheck collaborates with global platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, and others, publishing over 2,000 fact-checks annually. In addition to combating misinformation, PesaCheck scrutinizes promises made by public officials and illuminates public finances to promote transparency.

As part of Code for Africa (CfA), the largest non-profit civic technology and investigative journalism network on the continent, PesaCheck continues to push the boundaries of fact-checking, journalism, and civic technology to foster democratic governance and accountability.


Position Overview: Fact-Checker

We are looking for dedicated fact-checkers with journalism or investigative research backgrounds who are committed to fighting the spread of misinformation across Africa. You will be working remotely as part of a transnational team using digital collaboration tools to create fact-checking content for a global audience and international media partners.


Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor local and regional media sources to detect misleading or harmful content, including hate speech and misinformation.
  • Analyze public statements and manuscripts to identify factual errors, logical inconsistencies, or omissions, determining their classification as misinformation or other misleading content.
  • Investigate claims made on social media, mainstream media, and by public figures.
  • Examine cited sources and research additional documents to verify the validity of the information.
  • Write long-form fact checks and explainer articles that clarify why a particular statement or manuscript has been classified as misinformation, supporting your conclusions with credible evidence.
  • Collaborate with the PesaCheck media team and digital innovation experts on special fact-checking projects.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in journalism, investigative research, or fact-checking.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex information and present findings clearly and concisely for diverse audiences.
  • Strong news literacy and critical thinking skills to identify misinformation.
  • Demonstrated exceptional writing skills with the ability to work under tight deadlines and handle high work volumes.
  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written English.
  • Bilingual applicants (English and French) will have an advantage. Additional languages like Arabic, Portuguese, and Somali are preferred but not required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in multinational, multilingual digital newsrooms.
  • Understanding of disinformation and digital verification tools.
  • Familiarity with working on large datasets and transnational newsrooms.
  • Strong decision-making and presentation skills.

Job Location

Remote – Anywhere in Africa. The position offers the flexibility to work from anywhere on the continent, provided you have reliable internet access.

  • Optional: Arabic, Portuguese, Somali
