The Green Belt Movement (GBM) is a renowned non-governmental organization founded in Kenya in 1977 by Professor Wangari Maathai. It focuses on conserving the environment through the empowerment of rural women and communities, providing environmental education, supporting conservation and climate change mitigation efforts across Kenya, and building livelihood safety nets at the household level.

Position Summary: Extension Officer

The Extension Officer will play a pivotal role in implementing GBM’s project(s) within the designated areas in Makueni County. This position will engage local communities, promote sustainable land management practices, and support the successful execution of GBM’s environmental conservation projects.

Key Responsibilities

As an Extension Officer, you will be expected to contribute to the growth and success of the Green Belt Movement by working closely with local communities and project stakeholders. The role involves the following duties:

Community Engagement and Mobilization

  • Mobilize rural communities in Makuli and Nzaui to form tree nursery groups and participate in environmental activities as required by GBM’s project guidelines.
  • Serve as a knowledge builder and a motivator, encouraging communities to engage in environmental conservation and sustainable practices.

Training and Capacity Building

  • Plan and administer training sessions for tree nursery groups, ensuring they understand and implement the best nursery management and seedling production methods.
  • Act as a mentor and guide for communities, promoting sustainable land management and climate-resilient farming practices.

Project Monitoring and Coordination

  • Track the progress of all tree nursery groups and report regularly on their activities.
  • Supervise and organize youth groups and local communities in activities such as site preparation, planting, pitting, and weeding in line with project specifications.
  • Ensure the supply of high-value trees and agroforestry species to meet project planting goals.
  • Maintain seedling survival rates of at least 80% during the project period through diligent monitoring and support.

Sustainable Practices and Environmental Conservation

  • Promote sustainable farming practices both on-farm and on riparian reserves to ensure long-term climate resilience and land management.
  • Assist in the development of training materials and modules focusing on food security, livelihoods, and resilience-building in rural communities.

Stakeholder Engagement and Representation

  • Represent GBM in stakeholder meetings and collaborate with various organizations to ensure the smooth execution of projects.
  • Liaise with local authorities and government officials to support GBM’s objectives and community involvement.

Reporting and Data Collection

  • Provide monthly or quarterly progress reports on project implementation.
  • Assist with the GPS mapping of all project activities and share details with the GIS department in a timely manner.

Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in the Extension Officer role, the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

Education Requirements

  • A degree in Natural Resource Management, Community Development, or a related field.
  • A diploma in the relevant field with 5 years of experience in environmental or development projects may also be considered.

Professional Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in implementing environmental and/or development-related programs.
  • Experience in gender mainstreaming and social inclusion is highly desirable.
  • An understanding of different extension systems or fieldwork delivery methods.

Technical Skills

  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in commonly used software.
  • Experience in data collection and GIS mapping.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Strong English and Swahili communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Interpersonal skills to engage effectively with local communities, partners, and government authorities.

Additional Skills

  • Ability to ride a motorbike is an added advantage but not mandatory.
  • Demonstrated skills in organization and project management.
