The Green Belt Movement (GBM), a non-governmental organization, was founded in 1977 by Professor Wangari Maathai in Kenya. GBM is committed to conserving the environment by empowering rural women and communities through environmental education, promoting climate change mitigation, and creating livelihood safety nets at the household level.
Job Summary: Extension Officer (5 Positions)
The Extension Officer will implement GBM’s projects in various counties of Kenya, namely Nakuru, Nyandarua, Makueni, Narok, and Baringo. The role requires working closely with local communities, partners, and other stakeholders to ensure effective project delivery, focusing on environmental sustainability, community development, and climate-resilient practices.

Key Responsibilities
- Community Engagement: Facilitate orientation and sensitization meetings with local communities, ensuring awareness of GBM’s initiatives.
- Training and Capacity Building: Assist in the planning and facilitation of training sessions for communities in collaboration with program staff.
- Survey Facilitation: Participate in conducting socio-economic and Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) surveys to assess community needs.
- Consultation with Communities: Engage with communities to discuss the impact of GBM’s assistance and explore ways to increase community participation in project activities.
- Tree Nursery Group Management: Monitor and map all Tree Nursery Groups in the project areas, providing ongoing supervision and support.
- Information Sharing: Maintain a system for sharing information and lessons learned during project implementation.
- Partnership Development: Collaborate with local partners to enhance community capacity building and leverage resources.
- Volunteer and Group Support: Work closely with Green Volunteers and Tree Nursery Groups to support their capacity-building initiatives.
- Water Project Facilitation: Ensure community participation in all stages of water projects from design through implementation, handover, and evaluation.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Represent GBM at stakeholders’ meetings when necessary and ensure strong partnerships with local institutions.
- Progress Reporting: Provide monthly or quarterly progress reports on project activities and implementation.
- GIS Support: Assist in mapping project activities using GPS technology and ensuring timely submission to the GIS department.
- Community Engagement for Donor Visits: Facilitate community awareness during donor visits and meetings.
- Sustainable Land Management: Promote sustainable land management practices on farms and riparian reserves to enhance environmental resilience.
- Project Material Development: Assist in reviewing and developing training materials and modules for food security, livelihoods, and resilience programs.
- Casual Labor Payments: Follow up to ensure that community volunteers and casual workers are paid on time.
- Miscellaneous Tasks: Carry out additional duties as assigned by GBM management.
Skills and Qualifications
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resource Management, Business Administration, Community Development, or a related field is required. A Diploma with 5 years of relevant experience is also acceptable.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental and/or development-related programs is required.
- Gender and Social Inclusion Knowledge: Familiarity with gender mainstreaming and social inclusion strategies is a significant advantage.
- Field Work and Extension Services: In-depth understanding of fieldwork and extension delivery systems.
- Community Engagement: Proven ability to engage effectively with local communities, partners, and government authorities.
- Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Motorbike Skills: Ability to ride a motorbike is considered an added advantage.
- Language Proficiency: Excellent communication skills in both English and Swahili (written and verbal).
- Computer Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
