Job Overview

Are you driven by the desire to combat misinformation and make a tangible impact across Africa? Code for Africa (CfA) is seeking seasoned Fact-Checkers to join our dedicated PesaCheck team. We are hiring experienced professionals with backgrounds in climate change, gender issues, or science. This is a remote position, open to applicants anywhere in Africa.

PesaCheck is the largest indigenous fact-checking initiative on the African continent, covering 18 countries. Our teams work to research, verify, and debunk misinformation in both digital and traditional media, publishing over 2,000 fact-checks annually. PesaCheck partners with major platforms like Facebook and TikTok, ensuring that the public has access to accurate information. As part of Code for Africa (CfA), the continent’s largest non-profit digital and data journalism initiative, you’ll be working with a multinational team to create content for a global audience.

Key Responsibilities

As a Fact-Checker with PesaCheck, you will be responsible for:

  • Monitoring various public sources, including mainstream and social media, to identify misleading content such as hate speech.
  • Analyzing public statements and documents for factual accuracy, logical consistency, and completeness.
  • Investigating claims by public figures and determining whether they constitute misinformation.
  • Producing in-depth fact-checking articles that explain the classification of content as misinformation, supported by extensive research and evidence.
  • Collaborating with PesaCheck’s media partners and CfA’s digital innovation teams on special projects.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in journalism or research, preferably in fact-checking.
  • Strong research, numeracy, and analytical skills to break down complex topics.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to manage high workloads with tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
  • Critical thinking skills and a keen sense of news literacy and accuracy.

Preferred:

  • Experience in transnational, multilingual digital newsrooms.
  • Understanding of fact-checking processes, disinformation, and digital tools.
  • Familiarity with large datasets and data analysis.
  • Bilingualism in languages such as French, Arabic, Portuguese, or Somali is an advantage.
