Position: Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Plan Specialist

Your Role’s Purpose

As the Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Plan Specialist, you play a pivotal role in revising the project’s environmental mitigation and monitoring plan (EMMP). Collaborate with our technical team to ensure the success of anticipated project activities by implementing effective monitoring plans and mitigation measures.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Research and Context Confirmation
    • Conduct necessary research to understand the current environmental context.
    • Perform a literature review to evaluate environmental considerations.
  2. Risk Assessment
    • Conduct a desk review to identify environmental risks associated with the activities in the work plan.
    • Prioritize suggested activities needing special attention.
  3. Monitoring Plans and Implementation
    • Work with field teams to create and implement monitoring plans for proposed interventions.
    • Finalize updates to the EMMP for formal approval.
  4. Internal Systems and Compliance
    • Propose internal systems for maintaining Environmental Compliance Status.
    • Lead environmental reviews for activities of medium to high risk.
  5. Reporting and Support
    • Support the preparation of quarterly/annual reports for submission to USAID.
    • Assist in capacity building through needs assessments and environmental screenings.

Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in environmental compliance assessments, capacity building, and reporting.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, with a focus on authoring environmental reports.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with northern and southeastern Kenya, especially Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Wajir, Kitui, Makueni, and Taita Taveta.
  • Preference for those familiar with water, sanitation, agriculture, or sustainable livelihoods.

Level of Effort/Timeline

This full-time position requires 8 working hours per day or 40 working hours per week, based in Nairobi, Kenya. The contract is yearly, with possible extensions until the project concludes.
