Position Overview

As the Temporary Trade and Economic Officer, you’ll play a crucial role in driving trade and investment promotion activities and providing leadership to our economic development portfolio. Your efforts will contribute to strengthening the economic ties between Ireland and Kenya while supporting private sector engagement and trade and development outcomes.

Roles and Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  1. Analytics Expertise: Provide high-quality analytics on trade and economics to shape our strategy, partnerships, visibility, and impact.
  2. Engage for Impact: Proactively engage with development partners to enhance trade, economic, and private sector engagement outcomes, especially for women and youth.
  3. Business Network: Actively engage with businesses and business networks to identify opportunities and strengthen two-way trade.
  4. Support Business Ireland Kenya: Assist in the Embassy’s engagement with Business Ireland Kenya.
  5. Team Ireland Coordination: Liaise with Irish State Agencies to ensure strong coordination on Team Ireland objectives.
  6. Stakeholder Relations: Build and maintain strategic contacts with key partners, including Irish and Kenyan governments, public and international institutions, trade associations, and companies.
  7. Strategy Development: Contribute to the development and implementation of the Mission’s business plan and new strategy.
  8. Networking: Represent the Embassy in relevant working groups and coordination structures to promote Ireland’s policy priorities effectively.
  9. Collaboration: Contribute to the work of the wider Embassy team as required.

Essential Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must demonstrate:

  • Educational Background: A Master’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Business Administration, International Development, or a related field.
  • Work Experience: A minimum of 5 years of work experience in the trade/commercial sector, preferably with an Embassy, INGO, UN Agency, or similar organization.
  • Trade Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of international trade and the regulatory environment in Kenya and the region.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: The ability to network and engage with diverse stakeholders for shared results.
  • Analytical Skills: Specialist knowledge and analytical skills in trade/investment promotion and/or private sector engagement.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication, writing, and reporting skills in English.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to deliver results.
  • Proficiency: Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Integrity: High degree of trust and integrity.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel regularly within Kenya and potentially internationally (up to 30 days/year).
  • Work Authorization: All applicants must have a permanent legal right to reside and work in Kenya.

Desirable Skills and Experience

It’s a plus if you have:

  • Understanding of the role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy.
  • Established networks and contacts in the trade/commercial sector and/or economic development sector.
  • Previous experience in a diplomatic mission.

Terms and Conditions

  • Temporary Position: This role is temporary (maternity leave cover) for 6 months, from January 1st to June 30th, 2024.
  • Working Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week, with standard office hours from 8 am to 4 pm. Occasional additional hours or work-related events outside working hours may be required. Travel may be necessary within and outside Kenya.
  • Leave Entitlement: Annual Leave entitlement of 21 days per annum applied pro rata.
  • Salary: The salary for this position is KES 292,032 per month, paid locally on a monthly basis. Salaries are paid directly to a bank account; therefore, the successful candidate must have a bank account.
