About IFC

IFC, a distinguished member of the World Bank Group, stands as the premier global development institution dedicated to catalyzing private sector growth in emerging markets. Our reach extends to over 100 countries, where we deploy our capital, expertise, and influence to cultivate markets and opportunities in developing nations. In fiscal year 2023, we proudly committed a record-breaking US$43.7 billion to private companies and financial institutions in developing countries. This endeavor harnesses the private sector’s power to eradicate extreme poverty and foster shared prosperity in a world grappling with compounding crises. A Transformational Strategy: Creating Markets

IFC has embarked on an ambitious new strategy aimed at invigorating investment activity by “Creating Markets,” especially in Low-Income Countries (LICs) and Fragile and Conflict Situations (FCS). This innovative approach calls for a proactive role in generating, deepening, and expanding markets and projects, rather than solely relying on client proposals. Our success relies on pioneering groundwork with governments and World Bank partners to enable private sector solutions and financing. We call this pioneering approach the “Cascade.” Collaborating with clients, we prioritize private sector solutions to address development challenges, reserving public financing for situations where no other alternatives suffice.

The Manufacturing, Agribusiness & Services (MAS) Industry Group is pivotal in advancing IFC’s strategic objectives. It encompasses investments in global manufacturing, services, agribusiness, health, and education sectors, all of which address fundamental needs, create jobs, contribute to government revenue, and fuel economic growth. In IFC’s client countries, these sectors often constitute up to 80% of overall economic activity and can be responsible for up to 90% of employment, particularly in the world’s most impoverished nations.
