The Role: Driver – Turkana

Plan International is setting up a field office in Turkana County to support both the host and refugee populations through a multi-sectoral response, focusing on food and livelihoods security, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Education in Emergencies, and Protection. We are seeking a reliable Project Driver based in Turkana to assist with all transport-related duties.


Key Responsibilities and Main Work Activities

Transportation (50%)

  • Provide safe, efficient, and timely transportation of staff and designated individuals to various locations as instructed.
  • Transport goods to required destinations promptly and securely.
  • Ensure the safeguarding of Plan International assets within the vehicle at all times.
  • Maintain an updated vehicle logbook to track usage.
  • Execute office errands efficiently to support project communications and logistics.
  • Uphold the highest level of conduct on the road, ensuring due care and consideration for other road users and pedestrians.

Maintenance (30%)

  • Maintain a clean and well-maintained vehicle to prevent breakdowns and ensure passenger comfort.
  • Ensure the vehicle is equipped with a valid first aid kit, functional safety belts, fire extinguisher, and all necessary local licenses and inspection certificates.
  • Refuel the vehicle using an approved fuel voucher/fuel card and maintain an updated vehicle log sheet.
  • Safely park the vehicle at a designated place by the end of each working day, no later than 6 pm.
  • Report incidents and accidents involving Plan International vehicles to the immediate supervisor promptly.

Compliance (10%)

  • Adhere to transport and corporate policies to ensure efficiency and harmony with other departments and government regulations.
  • Maintain a valid driving license and produce it when required.
  • Promote and abide by Plan International policies, including the Safeguarding Children and Young People Policy, Code of Conduct, and related mandatory reporting responsibilities.

Safeguarding Children and Young People (Safeguarding) and Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI) (5%)

  • Understand and implement responsibilities under Safeguarding and GEI policies and Plan International’s Code of Conduct, ensuring that concerns are reported and managed according to appropriate procedures.
  • Lead the orientation of program staff to ensure they are properly inducted and understand their role in upholding Plan International’s safeguarding and GEI policies.
  • Ensure Plan International’s global policies for Safeguarding Children and Young People and Gender Equality and Inclusion are fully embedded in project design, implementation, and day-to-day work.
  • Contribute to Plan International’s global efforts to ensure safeguarding and GEI, including submitting relevant reporting and data.

Other Duties (5%)

  • Perform any other assigned duties by the supervisor.

Technical Expertise, Skills, and Knowledge

Essential Qualifications/Experience:

  • O level certificate holder.
  • Minimum of 5 years of driving experience in a busy working environment.
  • Valid driving license – Class B, C & E.
  • Basic mechanical skills (Grade 3).
  • Valid certificate of good conduct.
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili.

Desirable Qualifications/Experience:

  • Defensive driving training.
  • Knowledge of one or more local languages is an added advantage.
