Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Driver to join the UNHCR team in Dadaab, Kenya. This position plays a crucial role in supporting our operations by providing safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services for UNHCR personnel, official visitors, and essential office items. Given the challenging and often complex political environment of Dadaab, the ideal candidate will possess exceptional driving abilities, a deep understanding of local driving rules and regulations, and strong people skills.

In this role, you will not only be responsible for transporting personnel and goods, but also for ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of UNHCR vehicles. This includes minor repairs and implementing safety protocols as required. Key Responsibilities

  • Drive UNHCR vehicles to transport authorized personnel, including staff, officials, and authorized visitors.
  • Deliver and collect documents and other essential items for UNHCR.
  • Meet official personnel at airports or other designated locations, assisting with customs and immigration procedures when required.
  • Perform routine maintenance on vehicles such as checking oil, water, battery, brakes, and tires.
  • Ensure the assigned vehicle is roadworthy and complies with UNHCR’s safety and security standards.
  • Perform minor repairs when necessary, and arrange for professional servicing of vehicles.
  • Keep the vehicle clean and fully operational at all times.
  • Log official trips, mileage, fuel consumption, oil changes, and greasing records.
  • Follow security instructions provided by supervisors and adhere to risk mitigation measures.
  • Ensure all passengers have the necessary documentation for travel.
  • Respond in case of accidents, ensuring that all necessary steps are followed according to local regulations and UNHCR guidelines.
  • Maintain emergency accessories in the vehicle, including first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and spare parts.
  • Maintain records of all vehicle-related activities, including noted defects and repairs.
  • Support the risk management team by identifying and addressing potential risks related to transportation.
  • Provide administrative support as needed, such as filing travel plans, submitting reports, and adhering to office protocols.
  • Assist in other related duties as required by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Completion of Primary Education or High School Diploma.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience as a driver.
  • License: Valid Driving License (essential).
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required. Additional knowledge of local languages will be an asset.

Essential Skills:

  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
  • Basic understanding of vehicle maintenance and repair skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of vehicle activity, repairs, and safety protocols.

Desirable Skills:

  • Defensive driving techniques.
  • Familiarity with Dadaab’s unique security landscape and weather conditions.
  • Fluency in local languages.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid.

Dadaab is categorized as a hardship location with a non-family residential setting.
