Position Overview

The Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs and Research (DVCAA&R) is a pivotal leadership role within AIU, overseeing the Academic division, including Academic Affairs, Research, and Student Affairs. Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor, the DVCAA&R will be responsible for strategic leadership and supervision of key university divisions, including the Deans of Schools, Registrar (Academic Affairs), Dean of Students, Director of ISAR, Director of ODEL, University Librarian, and the Senior Admin Officer – DVCAA&R’s office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Leadership: Direct oversight of academic affairs, faculty, curricula, and program quality.
  • Policy Development: Formulate and implement academic policies and procedures to achieve the university’s mission and objectives.
  • Strategic Planning: Lead the planning for academic matters, including new program development.
  • Budget Management: Prepare and oversee the academic affairs division budget.
  • Faith Integration: Promote Christian Faith- and-Learning Integration throughout AIU.
  • Accreditation Leadership: Guide accreditation processes and secure government approvals.
  • Communication and Interaction: Foster effective communication among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Committee Leadership: Serve on the management committee, senate, and other relevant committees.
  • Standards Maintenance: Ensure high standards in all programs and compliance with accrediting agencies and internal quality assurance.
  • Research and Partnerships: Cultivate a research culture and promote global academic partnerships.
  • Academic Projects: Oversee special university-wide academic projects and events.
  • Student Affairs Coordination: Manage student affairs and coordinate syllabus preparation and examinations.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Educational Background: Must be a Full Professor or Associate Professor with an earned Doctorate degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized university in Kenya.
  • Experience: At least 12 years of academic, research, and managerial experience at a senior level in a university or equivalent institution, including 5 years in a senior managerial role.
  • Scholarly Record: Proven record of scholarly and research achievements with publications in peer-reviewed journals and supervision of graduate students.
  • Financial and Strategic Expertise: Deep understanding of university financial policies, strategic planning, and procurement processes.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with the structural, legislative, and regulatory framework for university education in Kenya and global trends.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability in leadership, strategic planning, and development of institutional and industry linkages.
  • Networking and Resource Mobilization: Experience in building networks and securing resources for research and development.
  • Professional Membership: Registered member of relevant professional associations with a clean disciplinary record.
  • Ethical Standards: High ethical standards, integrity, and accountability.
  • Faith Alignment: A born-again Evangelical Christian active in the local church.

  3. Program Planning: Lead planning for academic programs and initiatives.
  4. Budget Oversight: Manage the budget for the academic affairs division.
  5. Faith Integration: Promote Christian Faith- and-Learning Integration.
  6. Accreditation: Lead efforts in accreditation and regulatory approvals.
  7. Communication: Facilitate communication among university stakeholders.
  8. Committee Participation: Actively participate in management and senate committees.
  9. Quality Assurance: Ensure adherence to accreditation standards and internal quality measures.
  10. Research Culture: Foster a culture of research and global academic partnerships.
  11. Special Projects: Manage university-wide academic projects and events.
  12. Student Affairs: Oversee student affairs and academic regulations.

  • Public Relations: Excellent PR and negotiation skills with faculty and students.
  • ICT Competence: Proficiency in digital tools and technologies.
  • Communication Skills: High competency in oral and written communication.
  • Vision and Planning: Strong vision casting and planning capabilities.
  • Team Leadership: Ability to inspire and empower the staff team.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Skilled in leading networks and collaborating with regional association leaders.
  • Cultural Competence: Proven cross-cultural experience and relational skills.
  • Integrity: Demonstrated record of integrity and commitment to a consultative decision-making approach.
