Job Summary

Together for Girls, a global organization committed to ending violence against children and adolescents, especially sexual violence, is seeking an experienced Deputy Director of Communications to join our dynamic and impactful team. As a key member of the communications department, you will be instrumental in crafting and executing comprehensive strategies to elevate the organization’s brand, drive awareness, and support our mission across multiple global initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Communications Strategy (10%)

  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Communications and other organizational leaders to refine and update the long-term communications vision and strategy.
  • Develop and maintain communications plans that enhance the visibility of Together for Girls and its initiatives, ensuring consistent messaging across all platforms.
  • Translate strategic goals into actionable work plans, guiding the communications team in achieving key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Provide leadership in all areas of internal and external communications, aligning efforts across departments and with external partners.
  • Refine core messages to ensure organizational consistency in press releases, fact sheets, newsletters, and other public communications.

2. Team Development/Management (10%)

  • Foster a culture of high performance and continuous improvement within the communications team.
  • Mentor and develop team members through supportive, collaborative approaches.
  • Set and monitor goals for staff performance and development, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.

3. Media Relations (20%)

  • Oversee press outreach, including editing press releases, statements, and op-eds.
  • Provide crisis communications support as needed, ensuring swift and effective responses to urgent situations.
  • Cultivate relationships with key journalists, editors, and media professionals to enhance coverage of violence-related issues.
  • Translate complex research into compelling messaging that resonates with media and target audiences.
  • Monitor media trends and identify opportunities to position Together for Girls as a leading authority in the field.

4. Project Management (35%)

  • Lead key communications projects and manage grants, ensuring cohesive messaging across all channels.
  • Coordinate with program managers and departments to implement grant-funded projects effectively.
  • Prepare and manage budgets, ensuring that communications initiatives stay within financial constraints.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external relationships related to communications, including partners, funders, and vendors.

5. Content Creation (15%)

  • Oversee the creation, design, and translation of materials in collaboration with external suppliers.
  • Develop and manage content, including written and visual elements, to support communications goals.

6. Support to the Director of Communications (10%)

  • Align strategies across departments, ensuring cohesive messaging and goal achievement.
  • Collaborate with partners on joint messaging and shared media objectives.
  • Execute special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Communications.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in communications, with a focus on media relations and public relations.
  • Proven experience in securing media coverage and building relationships with media contacts.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and presentation skills, with a portfolio of successful communications projects.
  • Experience in mentoring and developing team members.

Desired:

  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Swahili.
  • Knowledge of international development, violence prevention, or gender issues.
  • Experience working in a partnership environment.

Location & Working Conditions

This is a remote position with the flexibility to be based in Kenya, the United States, or the United Kingdom. Applicants must have work authorization in their preferred location. The role requires availability during Together for Girls’ core working hours of 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, with flexible working hours for the remaining part of the day. Travel may be required up to 10% of the time for in-person meetings.


Compensation

This role offers a competitive salary that is adjusted based on the cost of labor in the city where the candidate resides. The final salary will be determined by the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and the location of their residence.

For example, the annual salary for the position for a candidate based in:

  • Washington, D.C. will be $97,000 – $113,000
  • Atlanta, Georgia will be $73,000 – $87,000
  • London, United Kingdom will be £96,000 – £108,600
  • Nairobi, Kenya will be Ksh 8,588,012 – Ksh 10,436,549
