Job Summary

Muslim for Human Rights (MUHURI) is seeking a dedicated County Coordinator to join our team in Garissa, Kenya. The County Coordinator will play a crucial role in coordinating human rights activities, monitoring and documenting abuses, and engaging with community members and local authorities to advance human rights in the county. This role requires a passionate individual with a strong understanding of human rights issues, particularly those affecting Muslim minorities, and the ability to effectively mobilize and engage with the community.

Key Responsibilities

1. Monitoring and Documentation

  • Monitor and document human rights abuses within Garissa County.
  • Prepare detailed reports on human rights violations, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to provide necessary support and evidence for legal actions.

2. Community Engagement

  • Mobilize and engage with community members to raise awareness of human rights issues.
  • Organize and conduct workshops and training sessions to educate the community on their rights.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local authorities, community leaders, and other stakeholders.

3. Advocacy and Policy Influence

  • Advocate for policy changes at the county level to enhance the protection of human rights.
  • Represent MUHURI in meetings with government officials, NGOs, and other relevant bodies.
  • Coordinate with national and international human rights organizations to amplify advocacy efforts.

4. Project Management

  • Develop and implement human rights projects within the county, ensuring they align with MUHURI’s mission.
  • Monitor the progress of projects and prepare regular updates for the Executive Director.
  • Manage the project budget and resources efficiently.

5. Reporting and Communication

  • Prepare comprehensive reports on activities, achievements, and challenges faced in the county.
  • Communicate effectively with the Executive Director and other MUHURI team members.
  • Ensure timely submission of all reports and documentation as required.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications

  • Degree/Diploma in Social Sciences or a related field.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in human rights, governance, or community mobilization.
  • In-depth understanding of human rights and governance concerns in Garissa County.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili.
  • Must be based in Garissa County.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong community mobilization skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Experience in project management, including planning, budgeting, and reporting.
  • Proficiency in using digital tools for documentation, communication, and reporting.
