Position Summary

The Communications Officer will implement a comprehensive communications strategy for the Reading Champions project, ensuring alignment with donor communications, branding, and marking guidelines. This role involves sourcing and developing various communications materials, engaging with media, and maintaining communications resources. The position is based in Nakuru County, with occasional travel to Kilifi and our headquarters in Nairobi.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Communications Strategy Development
    • Design and implement a communications strategy for the Reading Champions project.
    • Develop creative product ideas and dissemination channels.
  2. Content Creation and Management
    • Source storylines and develop fact sheets, success stories, press releases, social media content, narratives for short videos, speeches, and other communications.
    • Maintain continuous engagement with local, national, and international media.
  3. Media Engagement and Visual Asset Management
    • Identify and collaborate with high-quality photographers and videographers to build visual assets.
    • Develop and maintain a vibrant social media presence.
  4. Reporting and Documentation
    • Support the development of monthly, quarterly, and annual project reports.
    • Ensure all communications materials are compliant with donor branding and marking guidance.
  5. Event Coordination
    • Organize and create communications materials for events.
    • Work with the project team to publicize activities at national and county levels.
  6. Stakeholder Engagement
    • Collaborate with partner counterparts and stakeholders to ensure the fidelity of all activity communications.
    • Disseminate key communications about activity results to the donor, stakeholders, and the general public.

Qualifications and Skills

  1. Educational Background
    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field is required.
  2. Experience
    • 5 to 7 years of relevant communications experience, preferably in a national organization or agency.
    • Established contacts with local and national media (newspapers, television, radio, etc.).
  3. Skills and Abilities
    • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams including donors, international staff, local project staff, consultants, and government officials.
    • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure.
    • Proven experience coordinating and managing diverse individuals and contexts.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
    • Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and graphic design tools such as Adobe Acrobat or InDesign.
    • Experience in social media content development (Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook).
    • Photography skills are a plus.
