About Us: Save the Children has been making a positive impact in Kenya since the 1950s. We are committed to supporting children through developmental and humanitarian relief programs, working directly and with local partners. Our current focus areas include child protection, child rights governance, education, health, HIV/AIDS, livelihoods, nutrition, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene). We have a strong operational presence in various regions, including Bungoma, Dadaab Refugee Camp, Garissa, Mandera, Turkana, and Wajir, with collaborations extending throughout the country.
Role Purpose: As the Communications and Media Manager (CMM), you will be at the forefront of shaping our external and internal communication and media strategies. Your role will be crucial in promoting Kenya and Madagascar’s work, influencing child-centered policy decisions, inspiring public support and actions, and fostering support from funding partners. You will lead innovative communication strategies, ensuring that global media messages are tailored for local contexts, thereby maximizing their impact on children. Your responsibilities will also include managing and updating our social media platforms and the country office website, ensuring accuracy and quality of information. Additionally, you’ll play a pivotal role in building the capacity of your team members in media engagement, campaigning, and ensuring brand consistency, all in alignment with organizational policy standards and donor requirements.
Key Areas of Accountability:
External Communications and Media
- Developing Communication Strategies: Create a comprehensive communication strategy, guidelines, and plan for our country office.
- Campaign Materials: Collaborate with the Head of Advocacy and Campaigns to design and produce impactful campaign materials.
- Funding Mobilization: Work closely with the business development team and technical specialists to develop marketable products for fundraising.
- Situational Reports: Lead the development and dissemination of timely humanitarian and development situational reports.
- Brand Recognition: Disseminate and protect the Save the Children brand at all levels.
- Storytelling: Support project leads and technical specialists in identifying and documenting stories of change and success for media and reporting purposes.
- Media Products: Review and present stories, photos, messaging, fact sheets, and multimedia products for our key public audience.
- Brand Compliance: Ensure compliance with Save the Children’s global branding standards in all communication materials.
- Media Training: Train key senior staff on communications and media, and support designated spokespersons.
Media 10. Media Relationships: Cultivate media contacts and establish beneficial relationships with media houses.
- Press Opportunities: Actively seek press opportunities to showcase Save the Children’s work and advocate for child rights.
- Social Media Management: Regularly update social media platforms to highlight our work.
- Media Messaging: Identify media issues, prepare messages, assess appropriate media channels, and facilitate message dissemination.
- Compliance: Ensure that all communication and media activities align with Save the Children’s global standards.
- Organizational Representation: Familiarize yourself with our work in Kenya & Madagascar to effectively represent the organization in media engagements.
- Media Materials: Draft media briefings, talking points, Q&As, press releases, and media statements.
- Media Visits: Act as a focal point for all media visits/requests.
- Profile Development: Develop SCI’s profile in local, regional, continental, and global media.
- Capacity Building: Build staff capacity in media engagement through training.
- Media Requests: Manage incoming media requests and coordinate with regional and in-country teams.
- Media Content Approval: Ensure timely approval of all external media content.
- Media Engagement: Engage with the RO, SCI, and SC members in developing country office media engagement strategies.
Child-Centered and Child-Led Media 23. Supervision and Content Gathering: Supervise and gather appropriate images and film, adhering to child safeguarding concerns.
- Multimedia Materials: Produce child-led multimedia materials, including photography, video, and written content.
- Child Safeguarding: Ensure delegations are oriented on child safeguarding during media trips.
- Risk Mitigation: Support risk mitigation during sensitive media outreach moments.
New Business Development 27. Media Priorities: Incorporate Media Priorities into all new proposals and awards.
- Resource Allocation: Ensure media resourcing meets the threshold of 5% of all budgets.
Internal Communication 29. Country Reports: Compile and develop Save the Children’s country reports, sit reps, and newsletters.
- Promotional Materials: Provide assistance in content and layout for promotional materials.
- Communications Calendar: Lead the development of a communications calendar capturing priorities of actions and products.
- Internal Content Management: Manage internal communications content, including archiving, uploading, and distribution.
MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning) 33. Impact Measurement: Develop systems to monitor and measure the impact of communication and campaign initiatives.

Experience and Skills:
Essential
- Degree in relevant field (Mass/Media Communication, International Relations, Journalism).
- At least 7 years of experience in a similar role or in media and communication.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills across various mediums.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing communication and campaign strategies.
- Strong understanding of media relations and communication approaches.
- Proficiency in graphic design and photography, videography skills a plus.
- Ability to multitask, work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and be a responsive team player.
- Excellent command of the English language and fluency in Kiswahili (French is a plus).
- Strong social media skills.
- Experience in identifying target audiences and devising promotional and campaign strategies.
- Willingness to travel within the country and across African countries.
