Job Summary

Mission Inclusion, a prominent organisation dedicated to fostering social inclusion and lasting social change, is seeking an experienced Chief of Party (CoP) to lead the Regenerative Seascapes for People, Climate, and Nature Project in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. This ambitious project, funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), aims to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities against climate change impacts, focusing on the blue economy, gender equity, and social inclusion. The CoP will serve as the principal liaison between Mission Inclusion, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and other stakeholders, ensuring successful project implementation and the achievement of objectives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leadership & Representation

  • Provide visionary leadership that incorporates feminist values to guide the project’s strategic direction and implementation.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all project-related activities, fostering gender equality and social inclusion.
  • Promote transparent collaboration among stakeholders, cultivating positive relationships based on mutual respect and equality.
  • Represent Mission Inclusion and the project at international and regional events, ensuring the visibility and success of the initiative.

2. Project Management

  • Lead the project team to implement activities with a feminist lens, ensuring they promote gender equality and empower marginalized groups.
  • Ensure timely and high-quality submission of all deliverables, including reports, budgets, and strategies for gender equality and sustainability.
  • Coordinate governance mechanisms between Mission Inclusion, IUCN, and local seascapes, ensuring effective communication and decision-making processes.
  • Support the development of project communication materials, work plans, and monitoring and evaluation strategies.
  • Facilitate coordination with the Gender Coordinator to ensure a strategic approach to gender equality, social inclusion, and nature-based solutions.

3. Safety & Security

  • Proactively manage and mitigate risks, monitoring developments in the WIO region that could impact staff and programming.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols, updating them as necessary to reflect changes in the regional context.

4. Staff Management

  • Oversee the development of staffing plans and recruitment processes, ensuring a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Provide coaching, training, and supervision to direct-report staff, setting clear performance objectives and offering regular feedback.
  • Promote staff well-being and a healthy work-life balance, modeling feminist principles in management practices.
  • Ensure compliance with Mission Inclusion’s internal policies, including the code of conduct, through regular monitoring and training.

5. Operations Management

  • Ensure efficient use of resources, adhering to both Mission Inclusion and donor regulations.
  • Oversee financial management, including budget tracking and expense validation, ensuring compliance with GAC requirements.
  • Develop and manage annual work plans and budgets for the project, ensuring alignment with project objectives and donor expectations.

6. Coordination

  • Foster partnerships that reflect feminist principles, ensuring relationships with regional authorities, stakeholders, and partners are based on transparency and equality.

Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in International Development, Project Management, Environmental Sustainability, Economic Development, Conservation, or a related field with a focus on Gender Studies, Women’s Studies, or Social Inclusion.
  • 12+ years of management experience in projects incorporating a feminist approach and addressing similar challenges.
  • 7+ years of experience managing donor-funded projects, particularly in multi-country contexts, with a strong understanding of GAC’s regulations.
  • Experience managing consortia-led grants, with a proven record of fostering partnerships through a feminist and inclusive lens.
  • Fluency in English and French is required; Kiswahili and/or Portuguese is a plus.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Web Conferencing Applications, and budget management systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale climate change adaptation and community-based development projects.
  • In-depth understanding of feminist approaches and gender equity, with experience integrating these principles into environmental and community development projects.
  • High emotional intelligence, with the ability to lead diverse, multidisciplinary teams in multicultural environments.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to develop persuasive messaging for varied audiences.
  • Proactive, resourceful, and results-oriented, with a strong commitment to gender equity and social inclusion.

Conditions of Employment

  • Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya, with 20% travel within the WIO region.
  • Contract: Fixed-term contract of 18 months, with the possibility of extension.
  • Starting Date: As soon as possible.
